148 FXUS65 KVEF 052144 AFDVEF Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 244 PM PDT Tue Aug 5 2025 .KEY MESSAGES... * Smoke from wildfires in southern California will continue to impact the area through at least tomorrow. * Hotter than normal temperatures and dry conditions will continue into the weekend. An Extreme Heat Warning is in effect for portions of southeast California and northwest Arizona on Wednesday and Thursday. * Critical fire weather conditions are expected across portions of southern Nevada on Wednesday and Thursday. && .DISCUSSION...through Monday. Visible satellite imagery and area webcams show smoke streaming across southeastern California and into southern Nevada from wildfires in California. Hazy/smokey skies will continue through at least Wednesday for much of the area as we continue to find ourselves under southwesterly flow aloft. This upper-level pattern will continue to transport smoke from the Gifford Fire (82,587 acres), Gold Fire (936 acres), and Rosa Fire (1,535 acres) across southeastern California and into southern Nevada and northwest Arizona. Of these three fires, the Gold Fire, located north of Big Bear, is responsible for the hazy skies over Las Vegas today. As smoke and haze continue to filter through the area, air quality will continue to fluctuate. Temperatures will continue to increase a degree or two each day, peaking on Thursday. These hotter than normal temperatures will result in Moderate-to-High HeatRisk (Levels 2 and 3 of 4) across southern San Bernardino County into southern Mohave County and up the Colorado River Valley on Wednesday and Thursday. These levels of heat will affect heat sensitive individuals as well as anyone without access to adequate hydration or proper cooling. Those with outdoor recreation plans should make sure to take proper precautions to mitigate adverse heat impacts. While temperatures will decrease slightly as we head into the weekend, they will still remain above normal as high pressure persists over the region. A low pressure system will roll through the Pacific Northwest on Wednesday and Thursday, which will result in breezy southerly-to- southwesterly winds picking up across southern Nevada. These winds combined with afternoon relative humidities bottoming out in the single digits will result in critical fire weather conditions for portions of southern Nevada. For more information, see the FIRE WEATHER section below. && .FIRE WEATHER...A Red Flag Warning has been issued for Nevada Fire Weather Zone 461 on Wednesday and a Fire Weather Watch has been issued for Nevada Fire Weather Zone 461 on Thursday. Both of these fire headlines are for low humidity and increased winds. Southerly- to-southwesterly winds will pick up across the Great Basin on Wednesday and Thursday in response to a low pressure system rolling through the Pacific Northwest. These 15 to 20 mph winds with gusts up to 30 mph combined with single digit relative humidity values in the afternoon will result in critical fire weather conditions. Any fires that develop will have the potential to spread rapidly. Outdoor burning and recreation with sparks is not recommended. && .AVIATION...For Harry Reid...For the 00Z Forecast Package...Breezy southwesterly winds will continue through into the early evening with 20 to 25 knot wind gusts dropping off after sunset. Winds will continue to maintain a southerly-to- southwesterly direction with sustained speeds under 10 knots through through tomorrow morning before picking back up tomorrow afternoon. Slantwise visibility reductions will continue through Wednesday, especially along the Daggett corridor. The potential for temporary surface visibility reductions also exists, but is lower than yesterday. Temperatures tomorrow will exceed 100F between 19Z and 04Z, peaking near 108F. For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast California...For the 00Z Forecast Package...With the exception of the western Mojave Desert where winds will favor a more westerly direction, breezy southerly-to-southwesterly winds will continue into the evening hours across the region with 20 to 25 knot wind gusts will dropping off after sunset. Winds across southern Nevada and the Colorado River Valley will continue to favor a more southerly-to-southwesterly direction through the overnight hours while the western Mojave Desert maintain a westerly direction and winds in the Owens Valley shift to nocturnal downvalley winds overnight. Slantwise visibility reductions are likely across portions of the region through tomorrow, with the most significant impacts expected from the Barstow/Daggett area to Las Vegas. Temporary reductions in surface visibility are also possible at KDAG. Surface reductions cannot be ruled out at the Las Vegas area terminals, but the likelihood is less. && .SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...Spotters are encouraged to report any significant weather or impacts according to standard operating procedures. && $$ DISCUSSION/AVIATION/FIRE WEATHER...Stessman For more forecast information...see us on our webpage: https://weather.gov/lasvegas or follow us on Facebook and Twitter
