A significant increase in moisture will be caused by a developing tropical disturbance located 1400-1900 miles east southeast of Saint Croix during its passage across the local area Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday. Moisture and rainfall will increase on Tuesday and become heavy by Tuesday night as showers and thunderstorms from this system bring amounts up to 6 inches across the area. At this time the heavier amounts are expected in the mountains, with the coastal plains and the U.S. Virgin Islands receiving 2-4 inches and northwest Puerto Rico around 1-2 inches. Locally heavier amounts are possible, but these are preliminary estimates. Showers with heavy rain may also linger through Wednesday night. Prolonged periods of moderate to locally heavy rainfall will enhance the risk of flooding, river rises, and mudslides. It is possible that some rivers overflow, and that flash flooding will develop as well. Forecast users are advised to stay tuned to weather updates, especially those that live or commute in flood prone areas. $$ SNELL
