... DRY AND WARM OCTOBER ...

THERE WAS LITTLE WEATHER OF NOTE FOR OCTOBER WITH THE MONTH
FINISHING WITH BELOW NORMAL PRECIPITATION. THIS, COMBINED WITH A DRY
JULY, AUGUST AND SEPTEMBER MADE THIS 4 MONTH PERIOD DRIEST SINCE
1989. IT WAS ALSO A WARM MONTH, WITH THE MONTH`S AVERAGE TEMPERATURE
AGAIN ABOVE NORMAL FOR THE 11TH CONSECUTIVE MONTH. THE HIGHLIGHT OF
THE WARMTH THIS OCTOBER WAS THE FINAL TWO DAYS OF THE MONTH WHEN NEW
RECORD MAXIMUMS WERE ESTABLISHED.

THIS MONTH AVERAGED 53.8F WHICH IS 1.6F ABOVE NORMAL. THERE WERE
10 DAYS THAT REACHED 70F OR GREATER, AND THIS IS 3 DAYS GREATER
THAN NORMAL. THERE WAS ONE DAY THAT REACHED INTO THE 80S, AND THIS
WAS THE 22ND. THE FIRST FREEZE OF THE WINTER SEASON OCCURRED ON THE
27TH WHEN THE THERMOMETER DROPPED TO A READING OF 31F. THIS FIRST
FREEZE IS 11 DAYS LATER THAN THE AIRPORT NORMAL. THERE WAS ONE
RECORD HIGH TEMPERATURE TIED, THIS ON THE 30TH WITH A READING OF
78F TYING WITH THE YEAR 1946. THERE WAS ALSO A RECORD WARM MINIMUM
TEMPERATURE ESTABLISHED FOR THE FINAL DAY OF THE MONTH, WITH A
READING OF 61F BREAKING THE RECORD OF 60F SET BACK IN 1919.

PRECIPITATION FOR OCTOBER TOTALED 2.62 INCHES FOR THE MONTH, WHICH
IS JUST OVER A HALF AN INCH BELOW NORMAL. THE MAIN PRECIPITATION
EVENT FOR THE MONTH OCCURRED THE 13TH THROUGH THE 16TH WHEN A COLD
UPPER LEVEL LOW SPIRALED ACROSS THE REGION WITH SHOWERS, ENDING WITH
A FEW LAKE EFFECT RAIN SHOWERS. IN TOTAL 1.60 INCHES OF RAIN FELL
WITH THIS EVENT. OTHERWISE RAIN EVENTS WERE EITHER LIGHT (LESS THAN
A TENTH OF AN INCH) OR WITHIN A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME SUCH AS WITHIN
THUNDERSTORMS ON THE 6TH WHICH FEATURED LOCALLY HIGHER RAINFALL
TOTALS OF A HALF INCH OR GREATER THROUGH THE ROCHESTER METRO AREA.

THERE WAS ONE SEVERE THUNDERSTORM EVENT THIS MONTH, OCCURRING IN THE
AFTERNOON AND EVENING HOURS OF SUNDAY THE 6TH. THUNDERSTORMS BROUGHT
ISOLATED DAMAGE TO TREES AND POLES FROM THE WESTERN SOUTHERN TIER
INTO THE MID GENESEE VALLEY. THE 10TH OF OCTOBER FEATURED CLEAR
SKIES WHICH ALLOWED FOR THE VIEWING OF THE AURORA BOREALIS. COLORFUL
STREAKS OF RED, GREEN AND PURPLE WERE SEEN BY THE NAKED EYE THROUGH
THE NIGHT ACROSS WESTERN NEW YORK. CLEAR SKIES ALSO ALLOWED FOR
SEVERAL FROSTY STARTS TO THE DAY, PRIMARILY THE 17TH THROUGH THE
19TH, 25TH AND 27TH THROUGH THE 28TH. THE MONTH ENDED BALMY AND
BREEZY WITH SOUTHWESTERLY GUSTS AIDING IN PUSHING THE MERCURY LEVEL
TO RECORD LEVELS THE FINAL TWO DAYS.

THE TEMPERATURE ON LAKE ONTARIO DROPPED FROM A PEAK OF 68F DOWN TO
58F AT THE END OF THE MONTH. WINDS FOR THE MONTH AVERAGED SEVERAL
TENTHS OF A MILE PER HOUR BELOW NORMAL. THE STRONGEST WIND GUST
OCCURRED DURING THE FINAL HOURS OF THE MONTH WITH WESTERLY GUSTS
REACHING 45 MPH ALONG A COLD FRONT PASSAGE.

IN ALL, THE WARMTH PERSISTS...WITH A DRY, QUIET MONTH.
