.DISCUSSION...

The latest upper air RAP analysis depicts an upper trough currently
over the Northwestern CONUS allowing for a southwesterly flow over
the CWA this morning. Current satellite imagery and surface
observations report mostly clear skies with the exception of some
clouds up near the OR border. Going through the rest of the day,
forecast guidance projects the upper trough progressing eastward.
As a result, dry conditions are in the forecast today for the CWA
with most precipitation chances staying north of the OR border.
As for forecast high temperatures today, they look to be a few
degrees cooler than those experienced over the weekend, but not by
too much. The Western NV valleys expect highs between the middle
80s and just around the 90 degree mark while the Sierra
communities expect to be in the middle 70s to lower 80s range.
Overnight lows for the valley areas look to be between 50-60
degrees tonight while the higher elevations of the Sierra will
see low temperatures in the upper 30s to upper 40s range.

Beginning tomorrow and going through the rest of the week, the
region will see a warming trend with high temperatures ticking up
a few degrees each day. Forecast guidance shows a pretty potent
upper high over NM controlling the pattern and keeping a potential
trough to the north of the CWA later this week. The forecast
calls for dry conditions along with the typical afternoon breezes
each day this week as a result. While minimum relative humidity
values down to around 10-15% will continue for a good portion of
the CWA, winds look to stay mostly below critical fire weather
criteria this week. Seasonal temperatures for early August arrive
mid-week, followed by slightly above average temperatures by the
weekend. For reference, average high temperatures for August 7th
are in the low to mid-90s for valley portions of the CWA, with
upper 70s to mid-80s for eastern Sierra communities. While record
high maximum temperatures are not expected to be in jeopardy this
week for the Reno area, the latest NBM run does show a 20-40%
chance of tying the record high minimum temperature at RNO over
the weekend (The current record high minimum temperature being 67F
for August 9th and 10th). So be prepared as there may be less
relief from the daytime heat with a decrease in overnight cooling
possible this weekend. -078
