Fire Weather Planning Forecast FOR S Cntrl and Sern Colorado
National Weather Service Pueblo Co
340 AM MDT Thu Apr 17 2025

...Red Flag Warning remains in effect for the San Luis Valley, the
southeast mountains, the I-25 corridor, and portions of the eastern
plains from 10 AM through 9 PM today...

.Discussion...

Overnight moisture recoveries have been generally poor, with many of
our mountain valley and mountain adjacent plains locations in the 30
to 40% range as of 2 AM. This will set the stage for a very high end
fire weather day today, as a strong spring system approaches from
our west. Extreme fire danger is expected today, with southwest
winds gusting to 60 mph and relative humidity values falling to
around 5%. Red Flag Warnings are in effect for the San Luis Valley,
the eastern mountains, Fremont county, and all our plains that have
been deemed critical for fuels by our fuels partners. To be clear,
the only plains zones that have been left out of today`s Red Flag
Warnings have been excluded for non-critical fuels. All plains areas
are expected to see strong winds and extremely dry conditions today.
Please avoid ALL activities that could spark a fire today, no matter
your location! Any new start could quickly turn into a very
dangerous situation on a day like today. Temperatures will also be
above normal once again, with highs topping out in the upper 70s and
80s on the plains, but that all changes soon..

A potent cold front arrives tonight, ushering in a pattern change
that looks to bring not only an abrupt halt to fire danger, but also
some much needed moisture and cooler temperatures at least through
Sunday. Most areas look to see favorable chances for rain and/or
snow for Friday and Saturday, including high elevation accumulating
snowfall, where Winter Storm Watches are currently in place. Drier
conditions return by early next week.

Afternoon smoke dispersions will be excellent today. For tomorrow,
rates will generally be very good or better over the high country,
and fair or better over the plains.
