...COLD AIR FUNNEL REPORTED TODAY...

Around 225 pm today, a cold air funnel was seen near Longview, WA
by several people who posted photos on social media.

Cold air funnels rarely reach the ground and are not rotating
violently. These occur with weak rain showers and thunderstorms
when the air above the storms is especially cold. They are not the
type of funnel clouds that lead to damaging tornadoes.

Cold air funnels are common in the Spring and Fall as seasons are
changing and there is some wind shear in the atmosphere. This
shear can be the wind changing direction and or speed as you go
from the surface into the lower levels of the atmosphere. Because
they are not associated with the types of thunderstorms that
produce damaging tornadoes, they are often low topped and
difficult to see on the WSR-88D radar, especially the further away
from the radar that the storm is.

The best action when you see clouds with any rotation, and or you
hear thunder and see lightning is to go into a safe shelter and
wait for the storm to pass.
