Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Pago Pago AS
151 PM SST Thu May 22 2025

.DISCUSSION...
The latest satellite imageries continue to show an active trough
over the area, producing continuous widespread showers and
thunderstorms. Brief breaks from rain showers will also continue
to remain as dry pockets within the trough line move through from
time to time. These conditions will likely remain for tonight
through the weekend. The blended model data together with this
afternoon`s (23/00Z) upper air data (RAOB) shows flash flooding
conditions remaining over the area for this time frame. Model
data also shows a high pressure system to the south holding the
trough in the area through at least the weekend. Once the high
pressure system exits to the east on Monday, much improved weather
patterns are expected for the rest of the new week.

Therefore, expect widespread showers, heavy at times with possible
thunderstorms to remain for the rest of the day through the
weekend. Hence, the flash flood watch remains in effect through
the weekend. The moderate to fresh easterlies will remain for
tonight through at least Friday decreasing to a gentle (10 knots)
east breeze on Saturday, becoming light and variable on Monday
night. Winds will begin to increase again on Tuesday through the
end of the forecast period.

.Marine...
PacIOOS buoy to the west (King-Poloa) continues to show seas
around 5 feet with long periods around 14 seconds. The buoy also
shows an upward trend starting the overnight hours tonight through
the end of the forecast period (5 days out) as a south swell moves
into the area. ASCAT satellite swaths from earlier this morning
show seas around 6 to 8 feet. This data together with moderate to
fresh (15 to 20 knots) trades will keep ocean conditions rough for
mariners and water recreational activities alike through the
weekend. Additionally, thunderstorms embedded within the
aforementioned trough will likely elevate seas and surfs nearby.
By the new week, winds will decrease to light and variable (<10
knots) with seas slowly subsiding. In the meantime, the advisory
for small crafts will remain in effect through the new week.
The possibility for a high surf advisory in the next couple of
hours is expected. Keep in mind, high seas and surfs together with
strong rip currents may become deadly.
