Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Pago Pago AS
155 PM SST Wed Aug 27 2025

.Short term...

Satellite imagery throughout the morning hours showed moisture
from the north of American Samoa being absorbed into a trough to
the south giving cloudy skies with showers throughout the
territory. However, the trough from the south is beginning to move
further away from the area to reduce it`s influence over the
islands. This is leading to a reduction of showers from numerous
to scattered throughout the evening with flash flooding unlikely
during this time. Easterly winds remain around 15 mph. By
Thursday afternoon and evening, drier air to projected to move
over the region to reduce cloud coverage to partly cloudy skies.
Overall, rainfall is forecast to decrease through early Friday
morning with flash flooding remaining unlikely.

For Friday, passing showers will likely increase with easterly
trades but severe weather is not expected. Otherwise, a mix of sun
and clouds are forecast with winds remaining around 15 mph.

.Long term...

For the weekend, isolated to scattered passing showers are
forecast as easterly trades of around 15 mph remain. By Monday,
a high pressure system from the southwest moves closer to American
Samoa to increase winds up to 20 mph with higher gusts and is to
remain through midweek. These winds are below the Wind Advisory
criteria. Showers are forecast to be average to below average for
this time period.

.Marine...

Rough seas remained as breezy easterlies continue over the
American Samoa coastal waters today. However, winds are expected
to slowly decrease through Friday which will decrease wind driven
seas. Since there are no major swell projected to move through
the region during this time, seas are forecast to slowly ease. The
timing of the High Surf Advisory along the eastern coastlines has
shortened to Thursday, but the Small Craft Advisory could be in
place for the weekend as seas still remain choppy from the
easterlies.
