Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Pago Pago AS
233 PM SST Sat Sep 6 2025

.Short term...

Satellite imagery throughout the morning and afternoon hours
showed mainly a mix of sun and clouds over Tutuila and Aunu`u
while Manu`a and Rose had numerous to widespread showers. As the
ridge weakens due to a high pressure system moving away from the
region, this is allowing a weak trough to come over American
Samoa. This rain is expected to move over all islands of American
Samoa throughout the evening and overnight hours. A slot of drier
than average air is anticipated to move over the islands on
Sunday, which would reduce the risk of rain to scattered (40%
chance). Even though confidence is not high for the territory`s
reduced chance of rainfall for tomorrow, confidence is higher that
flash flooding is not to occur throughout the day.

As of this afternoon, satellite imagery shows a front forming
near the Fiji region. This is forecast to move eastward and to
move over American Samoa by Monday and Tuesday. This timeframe is
forecast to bring cloudy skies and numerous to widespread showers.
We will monitor for the potential for flash flooding. Winds are
to shift from the north and be weaker compared to this weekend`s
forecast, but wind gusts may occur in heavy showers.

.Long term...

By Wednesday through the end of the week, a strong high pressure
system is to develop to the southwest and is forecast to push the
front/trough away from American Samoa. Below average rainfall is
anticipated through this time with winds increasing from the
east/southeast up to around 20 mph.

.Marine...

Rough seas remain once again today as a fresh easterly breeze
continues over the American Samoa coastal waters. Even though
the strength of swell has weakened, seas remain high enough so the
shorter period swell still creates surf over 10 feet along the
southern and eastern shores. Winds are to shift east/northeasterly
throughout the day on Sunday and to eventually become a northerly
gentle to moderate breeze by Monday and Tuesday. This will cause
seas to ease. However, as a trough moves over the region on Monday
and Tuesday, be aware of wind gusts near potentially heavy
showers.

An east/southeasterly breeze is to increase to a moderate to fresh
breeze by midweek.
