Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Pago Pago AS
215 PM SST Sat Jan 18 2025

.Short term...

A light breeze remained over the region with more than clouds
today to give above average temperatures throughout the American
Samoa islands, especially over Tutuila/Aunu`u. However, some
areas of the islands received showers but not heavy enough to
cause flooding. Satellite imagery throughout the day showed
showers and thunderstorms to the north and east of Tutuila/Aunu`u,
while most areas of the Man`ua islands received rainfall. This
convection is anticipated to weaken, but will likely move over all
islands tonight and will likely remain through the weekend. This
shower activity is not projected to cause flooding, but rather
average rainfall for this time of the year. This is a slight
chance of a thunderstorm as well. Otherwise, mostly cloudy skies
mixed with sunshine is forecast during the day on Sunday and
Monday. Winds, once again, remain light and variable, but gusts
are possible near showers.

.Long term...

A weak ridge of high pressure from the southeast is expected to
build into the region by Monday night. This is forecast to
increase easterly winds up to 20 mph throughout the week. Overall,
rainfall is projected to below average for this time of the year
for next week was another ridge of high pressure is anticipated to
build in from the southwest by later in the week.

Tropical development is not expected for the next 7 days.

.Marine...

The light and variable breeze has led to ideal conditions
throughout the American Samoa coastal waters as wind driven waves
are minimal and no significant swell moving through the region.
However, swell from the north/northwest is projected to move
through the coastal waters later tonight through Monday. This will
not be significant along the open waters. Surf will likely build
near the north and western shorelines, but not to advisory levels.
Otherwise, winds are forecast to remain light and variable
through Sunday night but easterlies return on Monday to increase
to a moderate easterly breeze by Tuesday through the rest of the
week.
