924 FXUS65 KPIH 092020 AFDPIH Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Pocatello ID 220 PM MDT Sun Mar 9 2025 .SHORT TERM...Tonight and Monday It`s a beautiful late winter Sunday across eastern Idaho as high pressure remains in control of local weather. Afternoon satellite imagery is generally void of clouds although a few very high cirrus clouds are seen streaking quickly across the region from time to time. Temperatures have warmed nicely into the 40s and 50s across many of the lower valleys where snowpack has already melted. Areas with a bit of snow remaining, like the upper Snake Plain, are still running in the upper 30s and lower 40s despite the ample sunshine. No concern for precipitation tonight although some patchy fog and/or stratus COULD be realized around Bear Lake and around Idaho Falls into the INL. The high pressure ridge will be flattened slightly tomorrow as a weak shortwave moves to our north. This will bring a slight increase of winds to the area as well as a bit more cloud cover but temperatures will continue to run on the warmer side of normal. Can`t rule out a very isolated shower in the central mountains tomorrow afternoon/evening but hi-res models aren`t overly excited with this potential so it appears most locations should remain dry. .LONG TERM...Tuesday through next Sunday. The next upper trough will move onshore Wednesday, with precipitation overspreading Southeast Idaho Wednesday evening and overnight into Thursday. Temperatures will initially be too warm to support snow in our valleys, with widespread above-freezing lows and snow levels above 5,500 feet areawide. Snow levels will drop to valley floors by late Thursday behind the cold front as daytime temperatures drop back into the 40s and cooler and lows return to sub-freezing areawide. Current 72-hour QPF totals through Saturday range 0.25" to 0.50" across our valleys with 0.75" to over 1" in the mountains. Models show a very brief break in activity late Friday into Saturday as the low departs to the east and the next low approaches the coast. This system will move onshore early next week with models showing widespread snow beginning Sunday. Cropp && .AVIATION... Dry conditions will persist over the next few days, although FEW to SCT high clouds will be present. South to Southwest surface winds will increase Monday afternoon as flow aloft turns zonal.
