Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Pocatello ID
137 PM MST Wed Jan 22 2025

.SHORT TERM...Tonight through Thursday night. Satellite imagery
shows generally dry north/northwest flow over East Idaho today.
Some moisture skimming the Montana/Wyoming border, but little
impact elsewhere. Expect temperatures to continue to weakly
moderate through Thursday, though overnight lows are still
expected to be sub-zero in several locations. Cloud cover begins
to increase late Thursday into Thursday night ahead of system
arriving for the end of the work week. DMH

.LONG TERM...Friday through next Wednesday.
Shortwave feature will descend out of Canada on Friday with models
showing a closed low forming west of Idaho on Saturday. This system
will bring very light snow accumulations to Southeast Idaho,
predominately across the high terrain, with snow totals continuously
trending lower with each forecast package. Current forecast
accumulations range half an inch to one inch in the central
mountains, 1 to 3 inches in the eastern mountains, and up to around
a quarter inch across the Upper Snake River Plain, with little to no
accumulation in the valleys. High pressure off the coast will build
inland late Sunday into Monday and continue to amplify over the
region early next week with no precipitation forecast through at
least Tuesday. While the majority of ensemble cluster solutions
maintain high pressure overhead through Wednesday or beyond, less
than 15% of the total solutions brings another broad trough out of
Canada with zonal flow or weak troughing over Idaho beginning
Wednesday. Temperatures will start off below normal and slowly
moderate to close to normal by the middle of next week. Cropp
