630 CXUS56 KPQR 020104 RRC CLAPDX ANNUAL CLIMATE REPORT NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PORTLAND OR 500 PM PST WED 1 JAN 2025 ...PORTLAND 2024 WEATHER IN REVIEW... 2024 NOTABLE WEATHER EVENTS & RECORDS * MID-JANUARY WINTER STORM INCLUDING SNOW, ICE, WIND AND COLD * HEATWAVE OF EARLY JULY * WARMEST JULY ON RECORD * AUGUST THUNDERSTORMS * 2ND WARMEST SEPTEMBER ON RECORD * 3RD WARMEST DECEMBER ON RECORD * 2024 FINISHED AS 2ND WARMEST YEAR FOR THE AIRPORT (SINCE 1941) MONTHLY WEATHER RECAPS... JANUARY...RATHER TYPICAL START TO THE NEW YEAR WITH MILD CONDITIONS AND RAIN AT TIMES. THEN, STRONG OFFSHORE FLOW ALLOWED COLDER AIR TO PUSH INTO THE AREA. A VERY STRONG ARCTIC FRONT MOVED ACROSS THE AREA ON THE 12TH AND 13TH, WITH TEMPERATURES PLUMMETING 20-25 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. STRONG EASTERLY WINDS OCCURRED ACROSS THE PORTLAND METRO WITH WINDS GUSTING 40 TO 60 MPH, ALONG WITH A MIX OF WINTRY PRECIPITATION. THE FRONT STALLED OVER SOUTHWEST OREGON ON 14TH, THEN MOVED NORTHWARD AS A WARM FRONT ON THE 16TH AND 17TH, BRINGING FREEZING RAIN TO THE PORTLAND METRO. WITH THE ICE, AND IN SOME AREAS THE CONTINUED STRONG EAST WINDS, THERE WAS SIGNIFICANT TREE DAMAGE AND POWER OUTAGES. TEMPERATURES MODERATED BY THE 20TH WITH MORE RAIN. THE 9.43 INCHES OF PRECIPITATION AT PORTLAND (PDX) WAS THE 7TH MOST ON RECORD FOR JANUARY. FEBRUARY...BEGAN THE MONTH QUITE MILD WITH HIGHS IN THE LOWER 60S ON THE 1ST, COOLING BACK INTO THE 50S AFTERWARDS. LOW PRESSURE OVER BRITISH COLUMBIA DROPPED SOUTH THE 14TH TO 17TH, BRINGING COOLER WEATHER. TEMPERATURES ROSE INTO THE LOWER 60S ON THE 22ND AND 23RD. STRONG MOIST SOUTHWEST FLOW BROUGHT RAIN TO CLOSE THE MONTH. MARCH...MARCH BEGAN RATHER COOL AND DAMP AS COOLER AIR REMAINED OVER THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST, WITH OCCASIONAL SHOWERS. THEN, BRIEF PERIOD OF HIGH PRESSURE BROUGHT MILDER TEMPERATURES AND DRY WEATHER. A POTENT FRONT MOVED ONSHORE THE 10TH. HIGH PRESSURE RETURNED WHILE OFFSHORE FLOW THE 14TH TO 19TH CONTRIBUTED TO RATHER WARM AIR MASS WITH HIGHS IN THE 70S. THE HIGH OF 77 DEGREES ON THE 18TH TIED FOR THE 2ND WARMEST MARCH DAY ON RECORD. THE HIGH PRESSURE RIDGE GRADUALLY WEAKENED AS LOW PRESSURE PERSISTED JUST OFFSHORE THROUGH THE 29TH, MAINTAINING COOLER, SHOWERY WEATHER. APRIL...MILD WEATHER EARLY IN THE MONTH WITH WARMEST DAY ON THE 2ND. A VIGOROUS UPPER LOW DROPPED OVER THE PACIFIC NW THE 3RD TO 5TH BRINGING RAIN AND COOLER CONDITIONS. ONSHORE FLOW MAINTAINED UNSETTLED WEATHER AS OCCASIONAL FRONTS PUSHED ONSHORE. BY THE MIDDLE OF THE MONTH, RATHER STRONG HIGH PRESSURE RIDGE JUST OFFSHORE BROUGHT OFFSHORE WINDS WITH WARM DRY WEATHER. COOLER AND SHOWERY WEATHER RETURNED FOR THE 25TH TO 30TH. MAY...OVERALL, FAIRLY TYPICAL WEATHER FOR THE MONTH OF MAY. BEGAN COOL AND SHOWERY AS BROAD UPPER LOW PRESSURE SHIFTED ACROSS THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST. A STRONG FRONT PUSHED ACROSS THE REGION ON THE 4TH WITH MODEST RAINFALL OF AROUND AN INCH. HIGH PRESSURE STRENGTHENED WHILE OFFSHORE FLOW ALLOWED FOR DRY AND WARMING CONDITIONS. A HIGH OF 91 DEGREES ON THE 10TH WAS THE WARMEST DAY OF THE MONTH, ALSO SETTING A DAILY RECORD. BY THE 16TH, ONSHORE FLOW RETURNED WITH MORE SEASONAL TEMPERATURES ALONG WITH SPOTTY LIGHT PRECIPITATION AS WEAK FRONTS IN THE FLOW MOVED ONSHORE. THE STRONGEST FRONT ARRIVED ON THE 21ST. UNEVENTFUL END OF MAY THANKS TO RATHER PERSISTENT HIGH PRESSURE OFFSHORE AND VARIABLE ONSHORE FLOW. JUNE...JUNE STARTED RATHER WET AS A STRONG COLD FRONT PUSHED INTO THE REGION THE 2ND AND 3RD. THEN, MOSTLY WESTERLY FLOW ALOFT MAINTAINED NEAR SEASONAL TEMPERATURES. ANOTHER UPPER TROUGH MOVED ONSHORE FROM THE 15TH TO 17TH, WITH SCATTERED SHOWERS AND COOLER TEMPERATURES. AFTERWARDS, HIGH PRESSURE STRENGTHENED BRINGING ANOTHER WARMING TREND WITH HIGHS IN THE UPPER 80S TO LOWER 90S ON THE 19TH THROUGH 22ND. WESTERLY FLOW CONTINUED THROUGH THE END OF JUNE, MAINTAINING MILD AND DRY WEATHER. JULY...OVERALL, IT WAS A WARM AND DRY JULY. IN FACT, IT WAS THE WARMEST JULY ON RECORD FOR PORTLAND. MULTIPLE DAILY HIGH TEMPERATURE RECORDS WERE SET DURING A 5-DAY STRETCH FROM THE 5TH TO 9TH. HIGHS GRADUALLY TRENDED WARMER EACH DAY, RANGING FROM 99 TO 104. AS HIGH PRESSURE SHIFTED EAST, SOUTHWEST FLOW ALLOWED FOR COOLER MARINE AIR TO FILTER INLAND. BUT, TEMPERATURES REMAINED ABOVE NORMAL THROUGH THE 20TH. BY THE 25TH, A RATHER STRONG UPPER TROUGH MOVED OVER THE REGION. MORE SEASONAL CONDITIONS FINISHED OUT THE MONTH. AUGUST...BEGAN WARM WITH RETURN OF STRONG HIGH PRESSURE OVER THE REGION. THEN, VARIABLE ONSHORE FLOW BROUGHT SEASONAL TEMPERATURES. A FRONT PUSHED ACROSS THE REGION ON THE 12TH, COOLING TEMPERATURES INTO THE LOWER 70S. BY MID-MONTH, A RATHER STRONG UPPER TROUGH DROPPED OUT OF THE GULF OF ALASKA ON THE 15TH TO 18TH, CREATING A RATHER UNSTABLE AIR MASS, WITH SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS ON THE 17TH. ANOTHER UPPER LOW MOVED INTO THE REGION FROM THE 21ST TO 25TH, KEEPING TEMPERATURES ON THE COOLER SIDE ALONG WITH SOME LIGHT RAIN. HIGH PRESSURE STRENGTHENED WITH A WARMING TREND THE 29TH THROUGH THE END OF THE MONTH. SEPTEMBER...AFTER A MILD START TO THE MONTH, HIGH PRESSURE OVER THE REGION STRENGTHENED, BRINGING MUCH WARMER CONDITIONS FOR THE 4TH THROUGH 6TH. THE HIGH OF 102 ON THE 5TH SET A DAILY RECORD, AND TIED FOR THE LATEST DATE IN THE SEASON WITH A TEMPERATURE AT OR ABOVE 100 DEGREES AT PORTLAND INTERNATIONAL. TEMPERATURES REMAINED WARM THROUGH THE 10TH. BY MID-MONTH, A RATHER STRONG UPPER TROUGH DROPPED OUT OF THE GULF OF ALASKA ON THE 10TH TO 12TH, BRINGING COOLER SHOWERY WEATHER. ANOTHER BRIEF WARMING PERIOD OCCURRED FROM THE 22ND TO 24TH. A STRONG COLD FRONT MOVED INLAND ON THE 25TH, BRINGING RAIN AND MUCH COOLER TEMPERATURES. OVERALL, ENDED UP AS THE 2ND WARMEST SEPTEMBER ON RECORD. OCTOBER...FALL WAS IN FULL FORCE AS THE MONTH BEGAN WITH A ROLLER COASTER RIDE. HIGHS IN THE LOWER 80S ON THE 1ST AND 7TH, WHILE A COLD FRONT MOVED ACROSS THE REGION ON THE 4TH. COOLER MARINE AIR SPREAD INLAND ON THE 8TH. FRONTS BROUGHT RAIN NEARLY EACH DAY FROM THE 14TH THROUGH THE 21ST. A STRONGER FRONT MOVED TOWARD THE REGION THE 26TH, PUSHING INLAND ON THE 27TH, BRINGING RAIN AND COOLER AIR. SHOWERS AND COOL TEMPERATURES PERSISTED THROUGH THE END OF THE MONTH. NOVEMBER...THE WET WEATHER OF LATE OCTOBER ROLLED INTO NOVEMBER WITH SEASONABLE TEMPERATURES. DRY PERIOD 6TH THROUGH 9TH, THEN FRONTS MOVED ACROSS THE AREA. COOLER AND DRY WEATHER TO END THE MONTH. OVERALL ABOVE AVERAGE RAINFALL. DECEMBER...FIRST TIME ON RECORD THAT THE FIRST 6 DAYS OF DECEMBER REMAINED DRY. BUT THE DRY STREAK ENDED AS WET WEATHER RETURNED, ALONG WITH ABOVE AVERAGE TEMPERATURES, FINISHING THE MONTH AS THE 3RD WARMEST DECEMBER ON RECORD. THE HIGH OF 60 DEG ON THE 18TH SET A DAILY RECORD HIGH TEMPERATURE. ALSO FINISHED THE MONTH AROUND AN INCH ABOVE AVERAGE RAINFALL. STORMY WEATHER FOR CHRISTMAS NIGHT THROUGH THE 26TH WITH BREEZY SOUTHERLY WINDS WITH GUSTS UP TO 45 MPH. ============================================================== NEW RECORDS SET IN 2024 (PREVIOUS RECORD IN PARENTHESES) + INDICATES MOST RECENT OF MULTIPLE PRIOR OCCURRENCES JANUARY... 13TH NEW.
