FIRE WEATHER PLANNING FORECAST FOR UPPER MICHIGAN
National Weather Service Marquette MI
540 AM EDT Sat Oct 5 2024

...CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS EXPECTED TODAY, OCTOBER 5TH...

.DISCUSSION:
A low-level jet ahead of a strengthening cold front will force surface
winds to grow out of the south to 20 mph with frequent gusts to 35 mph
and locally over 45 mph. With only up to scattered cloud cover today,
RHs will fall to 25 to 35 percent for much of the UP today. Coincident
with ongoing drought conditions, a Red Flag Warning is in effect for
all of the UP today beginning at noon Eastern, ending in the west half
by 5 PM Eastern and in the east half by 8 PM Eastern. The cold front
will pass over the UP overnight into Sunday, with wind gusts veering
out of the west during the day. Thunderstorms will be possible (40%)
with the cold front overnight. Winds will once again be near 20 mph
with gusts to 30-35 mph except for up to 45 mph over the Keweenaw.
However, with much cooler air behind the front and remnant cloud cover,
RHs will only fall to the mid 50 percent to mid 60 percent range. This
will also be happening after around half an inch of precipitation,
further dampening fire weather threats for Sunday.
