Subject: Return of Water Level Observations on the Potomac River
at Harpers Ferry WV

Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, in coordination with the
United States Geological Survey, has installed a new stage-only
river gauge on the Potomac River. The new gauge is located
slightly upstream from where the Shenandoah River merges into the
Potomac River. This gauge is a replacement for the previous gauge
that was destroyed by a train derailment in December 2019. Water
level observations have been reported on the Potomac River at
Harpers Ferry since at least the 1877.

Water level observations from the new gauge will be made public on
the National Weather Services National Water Prediction Service
website beginning at 12 UTC (7:00 AM EST) on 28 February 2025.

Water level data for the Harpers Ferry gauge can be found at the
following website:

https://water.noaa.gov/gauges/HFEW2

Flood Categories will remain unchanged from the previous levels:

 1. The major flood stage at this river gauge will remain at 24
 feet.

2. The moderate flood stage at this river gauge will
remain at 21.5 feet.

3. The minor flood stage at this river gauge will remain at 18
feet.
