Subject: Modification to Minor and Moderate flood categories for
the Washington D.C. tidal gauge located along the Washington
Channel at SW Waterfront (WASD2)

Effective at 12:00 Universal Coordinated Time (UTC) (8:00 AM EDT)
on Monday 7 April 2025, the National Weather Service will modify
the minor and moderate flood stages for WASD2.

The new flood categories will be as follows:

  1. The new minor flood stage will be 5.3 feet above Mean Lower
Low Water (MLLW). The previous minor flood stage was 4.2 feet
    above MLLW.

 2. The new moderate flood stage will be 6.5 feet above MLLW.
The previous moderate flood stage was 5.3 feet above MLLW.

3. The major flood stage at this tidal gauge will remain
unchanged at 7.0 feet above MLLW.

Therefore, starting at 12:00 UTC (8:00 AM EDT) on Monday 7 April
2025, Coastal Flood Advisories will reference the new minor flood
category and Coastal Flood Warnings will reference the new
moderate flood category. This change is part of a re-evaluation of
tidal flood stages with local emergency managers and floodplain
managers to reflect flooding impacts.
