.DISCUSSION...
A Pacific cold front will stall in a southwest-to-northeast-oriented
manner across W TX today, with southwesterly winds prevailing in its
wake while backing to the south ahead of it. Temperatures will range
from the lower 80s near the NM state line, and into the upper 80s to
perhaps even lower 90s in the eastern Rolling Plains, resulting in a
wide range of minimum RH values across the forecast area. The lowest
RH values will be west of the stalled front, with minimum RH values
falling into the upper teens west of the I-27 corridor and rising
above 20 percent in the Rolling Plains given the depth of the mixing
heights. However, wind speeds will be tempered, which will mitigate
the risk for growth and spread. RH will recover above 50 percent
area-wide tonight.
An elevated fire weather risk may develop during the afternoon hours
Saturday, as brisk, northwest winds develop beneath the passage of a
quick-moving disturbance aloft and as the Pacific cold front finally
clears east of the 100th meridian. A strong cold front will then
move in from the north Saturday evening, resulting in a northerly
wind shift, with brisk, northeast winds following the front.
