Fire Weather Planning Forecast For Southwestern California
National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard CA
316 PM PDT Sun Aug 3 2025

...ELEVATED FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS FOR SOUTHERN SANTA BARBARA AND
INTERIOR AREAS THROUGH MONDAY...

...BRIEF CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS LIKELY TODAY INTO TONIGHT FOR
INTERIOR MOUNTAINS ESPECIALLY NEAR THE I-5 CORRIDOR...

...CONTINUED LARGE FIRE GROWTH LIKELY TO CONTINUE TODAY THROUGH TONIGHT FOR
GIFFORD FIRE DUE TO VERY WARM AND DRY CONDITIONS BRINGING HIGH RISK
FOR LARGE VERTICAL PLUME GROWTH, ALONG WITH ENHANCED NORTHWEST TO
NORTHEAST WINDS AT TIMES...

...EXTENDED HEAT WAVE WITH WIDESPREAD ELEVATED FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS
LIKELY ACROSS INTERIOR WITH INCREASED THREAT OF LARGE PLUME DOMINATED
FIRES WEDNESDAY-MONDAY...

.DISCUSSION...
Elevated fire weather conditions will continue through Monday for interior
areas including the Antelope Valley and foothills due to very warm
and dry conditions, along with gusty onshore winds. High temperatures
across the interior today and Monday will range between 90 and 100 degrees
with humidity values falling to between 7 and 20 percent. There will
be enhanced northwest to northeast winds across the interior mountains of Santa
Barbara and Ventura counties (gusts 20-35 mph), extending into the
I-5 corridor (gusts 25-45 mph), likely bringing brief critical fire
weather conditions at times through tonight, especially near the I-5 corridor.
There will also be elevated fire weather conditions each afternoon
and evening through Monday for southern Santa Barbara county due to gusty
sundowner winds with warm and dry conditions. The greatest concern will be
late this afternoon through tonight when sundowner winds will likely be
strongest and most widespread. During this time, wind gusts of
35 to 50 mph will be likely from Gaviota to San Marcos Pass, and
25 to 40 mph tonight extending eastward into the eastern
Santa Ynez Range, especially near Montecito Hills. Humidity values
will be falling to between 20 and 35 percent in the sundowner wind
prone areas, while temperatures climb to between 80 and 90 degrees,
warmest and driest this afternoon through evening.

For the Gifford Fire, very warm and dry conditions will continue today,
bringing the high likelihood of plume dominated fire behavior, especially
in the afternoon hours when mixing heights climb to between 7,000 and
9,000 feet. High temperatures will be climbing into the mid 90s this afternoon,
while humidities fall into the teens. Onshore winds will have a more
northwesterly wind direction this afternoon and evening, with gusts of
15 to 25 mph expected. For later this evening and overnight, there is
expected to be a wind shift to the north and northeast, with gusts in the
15 to 25 mph range likely, strongest near ridgetops.

Little change in temperatures expected on Tuesday, then a heat wave is
likely across the interior Wednesday through Sunday. During this time,
there will also be low humidities in the 7 to 15 percent range. This will
result in an increased risk of large vertical plume growth with new fires
across the interior, especially in the mountains.
