Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Elko NV
217 AM PDT Mon Sep 30 2024

.SYNOPSIS...Look for slightly cooler temperatures today though
plenty of sunshine will be had by all across northern and central
Nevada. Dry conditions will persist through the week with warming
temperatures back into the 80s and even some low 90s in central
Nevada by mid-week.

&&

.SHORT TERM...Today through Tuesday night. Skies are mostly clear
this morning across northern and central Nevada. The main features
include a dry and weak upper low that will meander around the
eastern Pacific and southwest California through the short term,
while upper level ridging will build in from the west. This will
give the forecast area dry conditions through the period.
Some afternoon breezes will continue across northern Nevada, north
of the I-80 corridor, with gusts to 20 mph. Highs today will be in
the 70s in the north to the 80s in central Nevada. Look for clear
and quiet conditions for the overnight with lows in the 30s and
40s.

For Tuesday and Tuesday night, the aforementioned upper low is
expected to move slightly to the west while the ridge maintains a
position out in the eastern Pacific. The air mass will remain dry
over the region and winds will remain light throughout the day and
night. Highs Tuesday will warm into the 80s with overnight lows
in the 30s and 40s.

.LONG TERM...Wednesday through next Monday. High pressure remains
across the Great Basin and southwestern US Wednesday and Thursday
which will continue to provide warm and dry conditions to northern
and central NV. Highs on Wednesday will be 10-12 degrees above
normal with 80s in most locations. The forecast high temperature
for Tonopah on Wednesday is 89, with the record high for the date
of 88 degrees. Other locations are expected to be a few degrees
below their record high temperatures. A similar scenario is
expected on Thursday, with Tonopah forecast to tie the record high
temperature of October 3rd with a high of 88 degrees.

Thursday night into Friday as trough energy approaches the Pacific
NW coast, the flow aloft across NV transitions from weak zonal to
southwesterly. The increased southwesterly flow will help push
temperatures across the northern half of the CWA up by around 3
degrees. Near-record temperatures are forecast for Winnemucca,
Elko and Tonopah Friday.

Weak instability each day Saturday through Monday across portions
of the CWA which should result in partly to mostly cloudy skies in
the afternoon hours. At this time not expecting any thunderstorms
to develop, however temperatures will be a few degrees cooler.

&&

.AVIATION...VFR conditions at all terminals today under sunny
skies. Northerly winds will gust 20 to 30kts across portions of
northern NV near and north of the I-80 corridor through noon
today, including at KWMC where gusts of 25kts are expected. This
afternoon winds will be relatively light, though KELY will have
gusts around 15kts. Clear skies and light winds tonight.

&&

.FIRE WEATHER...Look for upper-level high pressure to slowly work
to the east as a shortwave trough moves eastward over the Pacific
Northwest. Unseasonably mild temperatures will continue over the
area through the week. Winds will remain in check with occasional
gusts to 20 mph and minimum relative humidity in the single
digits and teens at least through mid-week.
