Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Elko NV
220 AM PST Fri Jan 10 2025

.SYNOPSIS...A low pressure system is expected to bring breezy
conditions to the forecast area and light snow showers to northern
Nevada tonight and early Saturday. Fair and dry weather with below
normal temperatures as weak high pressure builds over the area
Sunday into early next week.

&&

.SHORT TERM...Today through Saturday night

Current satellite imagery indicates high clouds streaming ahead
of a low pressure system moving into the Pacific Northwest, while
a ridge of high pressure is situated over the western U.S.
Afternoon highs will increase to the mid to upper 40s today, with
overnight lows in the teens and 20s. As the ridge shifts
southward, the attendant cold front will bring increasing
cloudiness and periods of light snow this afternoon and evening,
with most of this snow confined to Elko County. Locations such as
the Jarbidge Wilderness, Independence Range, and Ruby Mtns/E
Humboldt Range can expect 1 to 4 inches of snow, with around an
inch or less for the valleys.

Here are probabilities of a trace of snow or more for select
locations in Northeastern Nevada from 10 AM PST today until 10 AM
PST Saturday:

Carlin 15%
Elko - 10%
Jackpot 90%
Jarbidge 100%
Lamoille 65%
Owyhee 90%
Spring Creek 55%
Wells 60%
Wild Horse - 90%

Additionally, winds will be breezy out of the west-northwest at
10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 30 mph. The strongest gusts are
expected this evening and tonight at the ridgetops of northern
Elko County. Precipitation will begin to taper off Saturday
afternoon as the cold front moves southeastward. Quiet and dry
weather with breezy winds is expected for much of the day, with
daytime highs ranging from the lower to mid 30s and overnight lows
in the teens to 20s under partly cloudy skies.

.LONG TERM...Sunday through next Friday

Sunday into Monday...an offshore ridging continues along the
Pacific Coast, leading to a cold northern flow across northern and
central Nevada. Weak shortwaves dropping south in the northern
flow could help produce some light 10-20% chance snow during this
time, having little to no impacts on travel. The 50th percentile
ensemble max temperatures across the region are forecast to range
from the upper 20s to upper 30s across northern Nye county as a
result.

Some northerly wind gusts to 30 mph are forecast Sunday morning
and then weakening late afternoon and evening.

Tuesday through Thursday...
The ensemble 500 mb cluster analysis indicates that the offshore
500 mb ridges moves back in over the western states while a closed
low forms either along the central California coast or just off
the southern california coast. This pattern is forecast to bring
dry conditions and moderating high temperatures back closer to
seasonal values by Wednesday and then by Thursday, valley
temperatures are forecast to climb into the mid 30s to mid to
upper 40s across portions of northern Nye county.

By Friday...
Most of the ensemble 500 mb height clusters analyzes show the 500
mb ridge once again moving just off the California coast allowing
for the return of a northerly flow pattern with a series of
southward moving weak low pressure shortwaves and cold fronts.
Forecast indicates a return to colder max/min temperatures, with
the potential for light snow showers along and a head of the
southward moving cold fronts, plus some gusty northerly post
frontal winds across portions of northern and central Nevada.
