Despite the relatively cold weather the past week or two, ice coverage remains below average, though that will probably change as we`ve see ice cover expand over the past several days. Ice has continued to thicken and expand wherever it previously existed, including southern Green Bay, and around Big and Little Bay De Noc, with some fast ice near the shorelines in these locations. This is also occurring along the southern shore of Lake Superior with higher concentration west of the Keweenaw Peninsula, with fast ice in Chequamegon Bay. Ice continues to further develop around the Sault Ste. Marie area on Lake Nicolet, Munuscong Lake, and parts of the St. Marys River, with some fast ice in these locations. Ice continues to expand in Saginaw Bay and Thunder Bay near Alpena. Ice greatly expanded in the western basin of Lake Erie primarily west of the islands with fast ice in Saginaw Bay. Now that we are in the heart of January, we will continue to see sustained below-freezing temperatures through the next five days (and likely beyond). Coldest temperatures are expected through the next couple days which will result in moderate growth for the entire Great Lakes before temperatures become a bit warmer Saturday through Monday (though still below freezing), so may seem more slow growth on though days for the central and southern Great Lakes.
