Current ice concentration among the Great Lakes has noticeably decreased the past couple weeks and is currently 20 percent, which is down from the peak percentage of 52 percent on February 21. Across Lake Superior, there continues to ice along most of the shoreline, with fast ice becoming largely reserved to the bays. Fast ice remains in the rivers and lakes that connect Lake Superior to Lake Huron around Sault Ste. Marie. Fast ice also remains in the Straits of Mackinac. Fast ice remains in Green Bay, though we are starting to see that be reduced to the southern half and Little/Big Bay de Noc. Ice remains in Saginaw Bay though fast ice remains only along the shoreline there. Ice continues across Lake Erie near the Islands and the eastern basin, with fast ice near Buffalo and along the shoreline to Erie, PA. A cold airmass remains in place through Saturday night in which there could be very minor ice growth. Mild air builds in Sunday through Tuesday, which should result in a decent amount of ice decay areawide. This trend is expected to continue through the end of the week.
