5 Day Ice Discussion...

Ice coverage on the Great Lakes is up to almost 25 percent with the
greatest coverage of ice on Lake Erie. Recent southerly winds and warmer
temperatures have allowed the ice field to break away from much of the
south shore of Lake Erie. This has resulted in some open water,
especially across the south central portion of the lake. Elsewhere fast
ice is mainly confined to portions of the Green Bay and Saginaw Bay and
also the northern portion of Lake Michigan near the Straits of Mackinac.
The open waters of Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, and Lake Huron all remain
generally ice free while shore ice remains in some areas. On Lake
Superior shore ice is present along the south shore especially west of
the Keeweenaw Peninsula and is also present in Whitefish Bay. On Lake
Michigan, intermittent shore ice is present from almost Chicago to
Traverse City and on Lake Huron there is shore ice surrounding most of the
lake. Lake St Clair is also mostly ice covered.

Over the next week expect slow to moderate ice growth to continue on Lake
Superior and on the northern portions of Lake Michigan and Lake Huron. The
southern Lakes will see temperatures that are near to slightly below
normal on Saturday then trending above normal through most of next week.
This will result in little change in the ice, with some slow growth at
night followed by decay during daytime or warmer periods that may reach 40
degrees at times. Ice on Lake Erie may continue to shift around based on
wind direction. Winds have shifted to the northwest this evening behind a
cold front which may cause ice to shift back towards the south shore
through Saturday. Southwest winds return on Sunday which could cause
additional movement of the ice fields.
