As mentioned in previous discussions, Lake Erie continues to be 80-90 percent ice covered, however the majority of it not fastened to the shorelines and continues to shift with the wind directions. Across the rest of the Great Lakes down to Buffalo, the Straits of Mackinac remain primarily ice covered with large areas of fast ice on the Lake Michigan side. Whitefish Bay, most of Green Bay, Saginaw Bay, and Lake St. Clair are all ice covered as well. Other ice covered areas beyond that are primarily shoreline ice, and the Great Lakes currently sits at around 27 percent ice covered. Over the next 5 days, the northern Great Lakes will remain below freezing, with a colder airmass moving in after Monday. For the southern Great Lakes, temperatures will be much closer to freezing, or just slightly above for afternoon high temperatures during the period. These areas will be subject to temperature fluctuations from low pressure system originating from the intermountain west that will keep the coldest air further north. Otherwise, ice coverage growth can be expected during the 5 day period through early next week.
