Overall ice coverage remains below normal for mid-January across all
Great Lakes with total ice coverage around 14%. New and thin lake
ice along persists along the southern shores of Lake Superior with
medium lake ice across Chequamegon Bay. There has been an increase
in coverage of new lake ice along the Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana,
and Michigan shoreline of Lake Michigan. Areas of thin to medium
lake ice continue in Green Bay and across the Straits of Mackinac.
Mostly new lake ice along the Michigan shoreline of Lake Huron with
medium lake ice across Saginaw Bay. The western basin of Lake Erie
remains covered in thin lake ice, with new lake ice across the
southern shoreline.
Moderate to rapid ice growth is expected across all Great Lakes as
an Arctic air mass enters the region. Low temperatures in the single
digits to below zero next week will allow for favorable conditions for
rapid ice growth.
