Fire Weather Planning Forecast for Western
and North Central for Nebraska
National Weather Service North Platte NE
303 PM CDT Thu Sep 19 2024

.DISCUSSION...

After a reprieve from the very dry air and windy conditions today,
near critical fire weather returns tomorrow, especially for the
panhandle and western Sandhills. Southerly winds strengthen midday
ahead of an approaching surface trough that will help push
humidity values back down to around 15%. At this time, it appears
the lowest humidity (northern zone 204) will be offset from the
stronger winds (eastern zone 208 and zone 206). The axis of
strongest winds (gusts 25+ mph) also shifts eastward throughout
the afternoon. While brief or localized critical conditions cannot
be ruled out from along the Pine Ridge into the western
Sandhills, widespread or prolonged critical values are not
anticipated, precluding any headline at the moment. With that
said, the combination of wind and cured fuels will still promote
fire spread during the afternoon.

This weekend, a slow-moving storm system is still slated to affect
at least portions of the forecast area. As of now, it appears the greatest
potential for widespread rain and possibly significant moisture totals
lies along and south of Highway 2. Confidence in measureable
precipitation decreases quite a bit for far northern Nebraska,
mainly near and north of Highway 20. Blustery north winds and
much cooler temperatures (highs in the 60s and even 50s) will
accompany the rain.

Next week, temperatures moderate and conditions generally dry out
again. The threat of critical wind and humidity appears low.
