Fire Weather Planning Forecast for Western
and North Central for Nebraska

.DISCUSSION...

A broad upper ridge over the Western US and an expansive surface
high pressure over the Great Plains will keep the dry pattern
going for Nebraska. Despite near or slightly below normal
temperatures today, humidity values will drop below 20% across the
entire region and below 15% for a portion of the panhandle and
Sandhills. When combined with strengthening southerly winds with
gusts to 30 mph this afternoon, critical fire weather conditions
are expected for areas near and west of Highway 83. A Red Flag
Warning has been issued for fire zones 204, 206, and 208. Tonight,
some gusty winds will remain in the heart of the Sandhills while
humidity recovery will be very poor. Max humidity values will
struggle to reach 50% for areas north of Highway 2.

More widespread critically low humidity is anticipated Wednesday,
including sub-10% values possible in the panhandle, as
temperatures rebound to summerlike levels. At this time, winds
appear light enough to preclude any headline. Gusty northerly
winds to start the day should actually wane throughout the
afternoon.

Another cool front will bring milder weather Thursday and Friday,
along with some bouts of gustier winds (but generally higher
humidity). The next period of greater concern comes Saturday as
temperatures shoot back up to around 90, humidity values drop
below 15%, and gusty southerly winds switch to northerly midday.
Trends will be monitored for potential red flag conditions.
