Fire Weather Planning Forecast for Western
and North Central for Nebraska
National Weather Service North Platte NE
350 AM CDT Thu Sep 19 2024

.DISCUSSION...

Cooler temperatures and decreased winds should be enough to limit
fire weather concerns for Thursday. Stalled cool front from
Wednesday is pushing through the area west to east and invading
drier air in its wake should allow widespread humidity values to
fall below 40 percent and settle in the 25 to 30 percent range for
areas west of Highway 183. Much weaker winds, generally 20 mph or
less save for far northern Nebraska (Zone 208), will preclude
critical conditions.

For Friday, with the area caught between departing high pressure
and the approach of the storm system impacting the area over the
weekend we`ll see a return to strong southerly winds. Though this
should support increasing low-level moisture, a return to well
above normal temperatures will reintroduce sub twenty percent
afternoon humidities. Some uncertainty exists regarding overlap of
lowest humidity and strongest winds with gusts peaking at 30 mph
and this limits confidence enough to preclude headlines. That
said, elevated to near-critical fire weather conditions are likely
for much of western Nebraska with greatest concerns being for
Zones 204, 206, and 208.

A long duration rain event appears likely to impact at least
portions of the area this weekend. While rain may move in late
Friday, the majority of the expected rainfall will occur late
Saturday through early Sunday. QPF amounts exceeding 1.00" are
possible for areas south of Highway 92 with a sharp south to north
gradient. This could be the difference between 0.75" and less than
0.25" between locations of only 20-30 miles gap. Expect confidence
in more precise amounts to increase over the next 24 hours. Beyond
Monday, temperatures look to recover to above normal values and
while fire weather concerns may return, signals for higher end
concerns any one day in the forecast period remain limited.
