Issued at 424 AM CST Fri Feb 28 2025 The main concern in the short term forecast will be temperatures, winds, and fire weather concerns today. Temperatures today will be above normal with highs reaching the upper 50s to low 60s. Winds will strengthen this afternoon, bufkit soundings have winds up to 50 to 60 mph around 700 to 800 mb that will mix to the sfc and could see sfc wind gust as high as 50 mph. The strongest winds will be across north central Nebraska and the northern Sandhills. The combination of strong winds and warm, dry conditions will lead to critical fire weather concerns this afternoon and early evening, additional information located under the fire weather section. A cooler air mass will push south out of Canada across the Great Lakes region with some of the cooler air moving into portions of Nebraska. Will see the greatest influence of the cooler air mass across north central Nebraska, where highs on Saturday will only be in the 40s. Western and southwest Nebraska into the Sandhills are still expected to warm into the mid to upper 50s Saturday. && .LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/... Issued at 424 AM CST Fri Feb 28 2025 The upper level ridge across the western CONUS moves east into the Central Plains and will see temperatures in the upper 50s to low 60s for Sunday and Monday. A cold front will move through Monday into Tuesday with precipitation chances increasing Monday night into Tuesday. Issued at 1128 AM CST Fri Feb 28 2025 Gusty winds are likely this afternoon into the early evening hours at both terminals with northwesterly gusts around 30 KTS at both terminals. Winds will gradually diminish to around 10 KTS by late evening and are expected to remain around 10 KTS through 18z Saturday. Skies will be mainly clear with a few high clouds around 25000 FT AGL. && .FIRE WEATHER... Issued at 424 AM CST Fri Feb 28 2025 The combination of drier air, above normal temperatures and min RH values that range from near 20 percent across southwest Nebraska to around 25 to 30 percent across north central Nebraska, will lead to critical fire weather conditions. Winds will be out of the northwest around 25 to 35 mph sustained with gust up to 50 mph. The strongest winds will be across the northern Sandhills into north central Nebraska generally from late morning through early evening.
