In 1973, an incredible ice storm paralyzed Atlanta
Georgia for three days. Schools and businesses were
closed with damage estimated at $25 million. Northern
Georgia was coated with incredible ice accumulations
ranging from one to as much as four inches. Around
300,000 people were without power for a week. On the
7th, Atlanta had been hit by a two hour blitzkrieg of
freezing rain, sleet and snow that produced one to two
inch water equivalents between 7 PM and 9 PM as
temperatures hovered around freezing. In 1966, the world
24 hour rainfall record was set when Tropical Cyclone
Denise inundated Reunion Island, located around 585 miles
east of Madagascar in the extreme Southwestern Indian
Ocean, with a staggering 6 feet of rain. The 12 hour
world record rainfall record was also set during this
event with an equally phenomenal 45.0 inches.
