.DISCUSSION...
A moderate size, long period northwest swell is peaking this morning.
This swell will lift surf to high end High Surf Advisory heights this
morning along the north and west-facing shores of Kauai, Oahu and
Molokai and the north-facing shores of Maui A reinforcing northwest
swell will arrive early Friday morning and maintain advisory level
surf through Friday morning. North and west-facing shore surf should
significantly drop tomorrow afternoon and evening.
Model guidance rapidly deepens a North Pacific low roughly 1,500 to
2,000 nm northwest of Kauai the next couple of days. A significant
fetch of gale to storm force winds associated with this low will be
directed down the great circle route toward the islands. This very
large northwest swell will produce XL size surf Saturday night through
Monday morning. Long period forerunners should start arriving around
Saturday afternoon, then surf will quickly ramp up Saturday evening.
The peak of the event is forecast to be from late Saturday night
through Sunday morning. There is a high potential for giant size surf
(40 to 50 feet) along north-facing shores Saturday night into Sunday
as the very large northwest swell moves around the state. A High Surf
Warning will likely be in effect from Saturday night into Monday for
the north and west-facing shores of many of the smaller islands.
East-facing chop will remain small through the weekend due to weak
winds.
Select south-facing shores may experience see some westerly
wrap from this weekend`s large northwest swell.
