Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Glasgow MT
226 PM MDT Thu Mar 27 2025

.DISCUSSION...

KEY MESSAGES:

1) Light and scattered rain, with some potential for thunder,
moves over the region this afternoon and evening.

2) Precipitation overnight tonight into Friday transitions quick
to mixed precipitation, with light ice accumulations in the
northeast corner of the region.

3) Light, yet accumulating snow will fall this weekend over
western and southern parts of the region, with highest
accumulations likely in higher terrain areas.

WEATHER PATTERN OVERVIEW:
A quick band of atmospheric energy will continue to foster an
environment favorable for showers and a few thunderstorms this
afternoon and evening across northeast Montana. As temperatures
quickly cool off overnight, some transition to mixed precipitation
in the northeasternmost counties will lead to the potential for
light icing conditions on roads and sidewalks. Meanwhile, the
atmosphere is priming itself to eject a low pressure system off
the CO Rocky Mountains. This system will be a large driver in the
continued colder temperatures and precipitation over the region
this weekend, where low to moderate chances (20-40%) of
accumulating snow exists in southern and western parts of
northeast Montana. Most lower elevation areas should see less than
an inch of accumulation, while higher elevation hills and the
Little Rockies could see 2-3" of snowfall.
FORECAST CONFIDENCE & DEVIATIONS:
Went with the base forecast today and saw no reason to deviate in
the near term from it.

.AVIATION...

LLWS: A brief window overnight exists at GDV for some low level
shear, with 40 kts out of the northwest through the first 2000ft
AGL will be most likely between 03-06Z.

Expected Flight Category: VFR transitioning to near IFR.

Synopsis: A weak bit of energy pushing through the region could
bring some light showers and perhaps a few bolts of thunder this
afternoon and evening, though coverage will be spotty. More
widespread precip with a forming low to the south, and colder
temps, means possible to likely (40-60%) chances of mixed and
frozen precipitation through Friday morning, which could degrade
airfield conditions to near IFR. There will be a short break in
the weather Friday before more precip returns into Saturday.

Winds: Winds continue to shift from south to more west, and will
eventually push to northeast overnight tonight and into Friday.
Wind speeds during daylight hours will mostly be 10-15 kts for the
airfields, while overnight winds will generally be light and
variable.
