.DISCUSSION...

KEY MESSAGES:

- Temperatures will be warming this weekend with a few strong
thunderstorms possible Sunday evening along the I-94 corridor.

- A storm system moving across Wyoming will bring the potential
for widespread rain for Monday, mainly across southern Montana.

- Ridging will bring an anomalously warm and mostly dry start to
  May.

WEATHER PATTERN OVERVIEW:

As a large, deep low off the Pacific coast moves onshore,
southwest flow will increase into Montana bringing warmer
temperatures and increase in moisture flow through the rest of
the weekend. As the trough slides east and cold front pushes east,
look for more numerous shower and scattered thunderstorm chances
Sunday afternoon and night. These storms have anomalously high
potential this early in the season to be strong to marginally
severe across the northeast zones and particularly near the I-94
corridor. The primary threat is hail given the CAPE, shear and
updraft potential profiles along with heavy downpours producing
localized 1"+ amounts. Most areas elsewhere in NE Montana are much
less likely to see thunderstorms or a wetting rain.

Additional shortwaves slide through the northwest flow begin the
trough passage, for additional isolated showers for Wednesday. A
ridge builds east toward the end of the week to again push
temperatures well above normal, meaning daytime 70s and 80s will
be common. Areas that do not see a wetting rain early this week in
particular will have enhanced drying potential and fire weather
concerns, depending on winds by late in the week.

FORECAST CONFIDENCE & DEVIATIONS:

Moderate confidence exists on the widespread rain chances through
Monday and marginal severe potential Sunday night. There is high
confidence for the warm and dry trend for the rest of the week. The
NBM was followed closely through the period.

DISCUSSION: MVFR ceilings are lifting early this afternoon with
high confidence they stay to the east in North Dakota tonight. Scattered
to broken mid- level clouds will hold fast until isolated
t-storms begin to develop late Sunday afternoon for at least the
vicinity of KGGW. Gusty southeast winds this afternoon become
mostly light/variable into Sunday afternoon.
