Rangeland Fire Danger Statement
National Weather Service Sioux Falls SD
421 AM CDT Thu Apr 17 2025

.DISCUSSION...

Cold front passes through the forecast area today and tonight, so
expect southeasterly winds to shift to northwesterly. Breezy winds
with gusts to 30 mph today, although stronger winds are expected
behind the front. Shower and storm chances increase through the
day with the best chances this afternoon and tonight east of I-29.
RH values around or above 40% will temper fire danger today
despite the warmer temps and stronger winds. Rainfall amounts
largely less than half an inch, with the highest chances (40-50%)
for more than half an inch of rain across southwestern MN.

Shower chances continue Friday, with cooler and breezy conditions.
Periodic low (less than 30%) chances for showers continue into
early and mid next week. Temperatures return to near normal.

Exercise caution during off road use of your vehicle as the
catalytic converter can start wildfires.

...VERY HIGH FIRE DANGER...

The Grassland Fire Danger Index will reach the very high
category this afternoon. Very poor weather conditions and
very low moisture content of grasses, and other dry
organic material on the ground, indicate that dangerous
burning conditions exist. Fires will spread rapidly and
show erratic behavior. Outdoor burning is not recommended.

OUTLOOK FOR FRIDAY AFTERNOON...The Grassland Fire Danger Index
will reach the high category.

The grassland fire danger product reflects fire danger for native
grasses. It is not intended for cured agricultural crops, nor
will it reflect conditions in road ditches which have been mowed.

lower and the relative humidity is higher.
