Rangeland Fire Danger Statement
National Weather Service Sioux Falls SD
408 AM CDT Tue Oct 1 2024

.DISCUSSION...

Winds will be light today, first starting out from the north-
northwest, transitioning towards westerly by midday and ending
southerly by the evening hours. The afternoon hours will again see
widespread relative humidity values ranging from 15 to 25 percent,
but with the weaker winds the GFDI remains in the moderate category.

Wednesday will see breezy southwesterly winds to start off the day,
gusting 25 to 40 mph throughout the morning hours before weakening
in the afternoon. Timing of the critically low relative humidity
values is a bit uncertain, but if they are able to quickly establish
themselves in the morning hours the GFDI will climb into the very
high category, but for now the GFDI remains in the high category
area-wide.

Warm and dry conditions continue into the beginning of next week.

...MODERATE FIRE DANGER...

The Grassland Fire Danger Index will reach the moderate
category this afternoon. Marginal weather conditions or
lowering moisture content of grasses, and other dry organic
material on the ground, indicate that there is some potential
for a fire to spread. Any outdoor burning should be closely
monitored.

OUTLOOK FOR WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON...The Grassland Fire Danger Index
will reach the high category.

The grassland fire danger product reflects fire danger for native
grasses. It is not intended for cured agricultural crops, nor
will it reflect conditions in road ditches which have been mowed.

...LOW FIRE DANGER...

The Grassland Fire Danger Index will reach the low category
this afternoon. Favorable weather conditions or a high moisture
content of grasses, and other dry organic material on the
ground, indicate that the probability of a fast moving fire is
low. Outdoor burning under these conditions can usually be
with reasonable safety precautions, but should be monitored.
