Rangeland Fire Danger Statement
National Weather Service Sioux Falls SD
420 AM CDT Thu Sep 19 2024

.DISCUSSION...

Showers and storms are possible this morning (40% or less) south
of I-90. Additional showers and storms possible (less than 30%
chance) this afternoon and early evening east of IA/MN State
Highway 60 with a cold front. As the cold front moves through the
area, expect dew points to drop and winds to shift to the
west/northwest. Winds will be breezy, with the strongest winds and
gusts this afternoon west of I-29.

For Friday, highs in the 80s with minimum RH values in the 25 to
35% range could lead to localized elevated fire concerns where
fuels are more cured. Greatest concern is for areas West River,
where wind gusts will be strongest (to 30 mph).

Rain chances return for the weekend and early next week, with the
greatest chances south of I-90 and east of I-29 Saturday and
Sunday. Saturday remains warm and breezy, but cooler temperatures
prevail Sunday into mid next week.

...MODERATE FIRE DANGER...

The Grassland Fire Danger Index will reach the moderate
category this afternoon. Marginal weather conditions or
lowering moisture content of grasses, and other dry organic
material on the ground, indicate that there is some potential
for a fire to spread. Any outdoor burning should be closely
monitored.

OUTLOOK FOR FRIDAY AFTERNOON...The Grassland Fire Danger Index
will reach the moderate category.

The grassland fire danger product reflects fire danger for native
grasses. It is not intended for cured agricultural crops, nor
will it reflect conditions in road ditches which have been mowed.

...LOW FIRE DANGER...

The Grassland Fire Danger Index will reach the low category
this afternoon. Favorable weather conditions or a high moisture
content of grasses, and other dry organic material on the
ground, indicate that the probability of a fast moving fire is
low. Outdoor burning under these conditions can usually be
with reasonable safety precautions, but should be monitored.

OUTLOOK FOR FRIDAY AFTERNOON...The Grassland Fire Danger Index
will reach the low category.

The grassland fire danger product reflects fire danger for native
grasses. It is not intended for cured agricultural crops, nor
will it reflect conditions in road ditches which have been mowed.
