Rangeland Fire Danger Statement
National Weather Service Sioux Falls SD
440 AM CDT Sat Oct 11 2025

.DISCUSSION...
Elevated fire weather is expected today due to breezy southerly
winds of 30-40 mph. The strongest winds will be west of I-29,
which will be a bit offset from the lowest relative humidity
values (around 30%) located along and east of I-29. Still, there
will be enough wind combined with recent agricultural activity to
lead to increased fire weather concerns for today. There will be a
20-40% chance of showers today as well, but only light amounts are
expected as rain may struggle to make it to the ground at times.

A cold front arrives on Sunday, and temperatures will heat up
ahead of it with highs expected to be in the mid-70s to low-80s.
Winds will stay elevated (30-40 mph), but better rain chances may
help limit the fire weather potential. With that said, elevated
fire danger remains possible despite the rain chances primarily
due to the winds and warmer temperatures.

...HIGH FIRE DANGER...

The Grassland Fire Danger Index will reach the high category
this afternoon. Unfavorable weather conditions and low
moisture content of grasses, and other dry organic material
on the ground, indicate that there is a high potential for
a fire to spread.. Outdoor burning should be restricted to
early morning or evening hours, when wind speeds are usually
lower and the relative humidity is higher.

OUTLOOK FOR SUNDAY AFTERNOON...The Grassland Fire Danger Index
will reach the high category.

The grassland fire danger product reflects fire danger for native
grasses. It is not intended for cured agricultural crops, nor
will it reflect conditions in road ditches which have been mowed.

...MODERATE FIRE DANGER...

category this afternoon. Marginal weather conditions or
lowering moisture content of grasses, and other dry organic
material on the ground, indicate that there is some potential
for a fire to spread. Any outdoor burning should be closely
monitored.
