Today:

A boundary moved into central Iowa overnight with steady to rising
temperatures occurring in the wake of the boundary. The coolest
temperatures at 4 am this morning were across east central and
northeast Iowa with reading in the low to mid 20s. The warmest
temperatures were in west central Iowa where temperatures have risen
into the mid 30s. The wind was from the southwest over the east an
westerly elsewhere. Wind speeds of 10 to 15 mph were common.

A strong cold front will move through Iowa today and will bring
sharply falling temperatures to the state. Very strong winds are also
expected as northwest winds increase to 25 to 35 mph with wind gusts
of 45 to 55 mph. The strongest winds will be over northern Iowa. A few
rain or snow showers are also possible with the light snow
accumulations possible across northeast Iowa.


Tonight and beyond:

The strong winds will persist into this evening before diminishing.
Despite the diminishing winds, wind chill values are forecast to drop
into the 5 below to 15 below range by early Thursday morning. Thursday
will remain cold with highs in the teens and 20s. A warming trend will
follow for Friday and into the weekend. High temperatures are expected
to be in the 40s on Saturday and in the 40s and 50s on Sunday.
