Weather Summary for Iowa
National Weather Service Des Moines IA
500 AM CDT Sat Oct 5 2024

Today:

The weather in Iowa has been quiet through the night and into early
this morning. Temperatures as of 4 am are in the low to mid 50s for
much of the state. However, patchy cloud cover over roughly the
eastern third of Iowa has kept temperatures slightly warmer in these
areas, primarily in the upper 50s to low 60s. Winds have been light
out of the east southeast overnight.

Temperatures and winds increase considerably through the day, with
highs in the upper 80s to near 90 and southwesterly winds of 20 to 30
mph and gusts up to 45 mph expected. This, in conjunction with dry
conditions, will lead to increased fire weather concerns throughout
the state today. Outdoor burning is not advised. Any fire that
develops has the potential to rapidly grow out of control.

Tonight and beyond:

A cold front moves through the state late this afternoon through the
evening, which will change the wind direction to more northwesterly
as well as drop temperatures back to more seasonal to slightly above
seasonal values on Sunday. Despite this change in pattern, still
expect one more day of breezy winds on Sunday. By early in the work
week, conditions mellow out with clear skies and light winds expected through
much of the week. Temperatures will be warming through the week, with
highs in the 70s gradually creeping back into the low to mid 80s by
Friday. No precipitation is forecast through the remainder of this
forecast cycle.
