Weather Summary for Iowa
National Weather Service Des Moines IA
337 AM CDT Thu Sep 19 2024

Today:

A few clusters of showers and storms had developed into the early
morning hours over portions of western into northern Iowa, though
remained below severe limits, with heavy rain and frequent lightning
being common. Otherwise clear skies across much of Iowa with warmer
overnight temperatures once again in the mid 60s to low 70s, along
with light southeast winds.

As the boundary continues to travel eastward this morning, showers and
storms are expected to continue, before drying into the afternoon.
However, as a cold front arrives into the late afternoon to evening,
another round of showers and storms are expected to occur, with the
potential for storms to become severe across much of the state. The
main hazards remain damaging winds and large hail, along with a low
tornado threat, with the potential mainly focused over northern Iowa
into Minnesota. Highs in the mid to upper 80s are expected once again,
along with breezy S winds before turning NW behind the departing cold
front tonight.

Tonight and beyond:

Lingering showers and storms are expected tonight, largely over
eastern Iowa before departing Iowa into Friday morning. Overnight lows
are expected to drop into the mid 50s to mid 60s as well. A lull in
precipitation is looking likely Friday, with mostly clear skies and
temperatures in the mid to upper 80s despite the previous frontal
passage. Returning chances for scattered showers and storms across
Iowa are expected this weekend, especially Sunday, along with
temperatures cooling by Sunday with highs in the mid 60s to low 70s.
