764 FXUS63 KDLH 101201 AFDDLH Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Duluth MN 601 AM CST Fri Jan 10 2025 .KEY MESSAGES... - Light snow showers and flurries across northwest Wisconsin and the Arrowhead will end this evening. - Snow returns Saturday and Sunday, with 2-3 inches for the Northland, and locally higher amounts along portions of the North Shore and northwest WI. - Colder temperatures expected early next week with highs in the single digits and wind chills in the -15 to -30F range Monday and Tuesday mornings. && .DISCUSSION... Issued at 300 AM CST Fri Jan 10 2025 Light snow showers continue this morning, as weak cold advection allows for weak low level instability. A secondary cold front, associated with the upper level trough, is entering northwest Minnesota this morning and will move through the area today. Weak forcing and continued cold advection will maintain steeper low level lapse rates and despite drying aloft, expect flurries and snow showers to continue through this afternoon. Best chance of accumulations will be across northwest Wisconsin. A brief break in snowfall is expected tonight, before the next system arrives Saturday. A clipper will drop into the northern Plains and move toward the Midwest, bringing light snow to the Northland Saturday and Sunday. Guidance continued a slightly upward trend with snowfall amounts, with 2-3 inches for most of the area. If low level winds remain out of the east to southeast at the onset of precipitation, some drier air could erode those totals. However, if flow becomes more southerly, which is suggested by some guidance this morning, amounts could trend upward especially along the North Shore, where lake effect enhancements could push snow amounts closer to advisory criteria. South Shore lake effect showers will continue in Monday. Colder air arrives early next week as surface high pressure slides southward through the Plains. This keeps the Northland in deep layer northerly flow. Highs Monday and Tuesday remain in the single digits with wind chill values both mornings in the -15 to -30F range. && .AVIATION /12Z TAFS THROUGH 12Z SATURDAY/... Issued at 550 AM CST Fri Jan 10 2025 A cold front will move through the area today, with winds increasing from the northwest at 6-12kts with occasional gusts of 15-18kts. A stratus deck will likely vary from IFR to VFR through at least this morning, before cig heights gradually increase to VFR this afternoon or early evening. Cannot rule out scattered flurries or light snow showers, accompanied by a brief reduction in vis. Accumulations are forecast terminals will be minimal. && .MARINE /FOR NEAR SHORE WATERS OF WESTERN LAKE SUPERIOR/... Issued at 300 AM CST Fri Jan 10 2025 A secondary cold front will move through the area today, with light snow showers or flurries continuing over western Lake Superior. Winds and waves will be quiet Saturday and Saturday night. Strong northwesterly winds are expected by Sunday evening as another system moves east of the area. Hazardous conditions are possible late Sunday through Monday.
