561 FXUS63 KDLH 092332 AFDDLH Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Duluth MN 532 PM CST Sat Nov 9 2024 .KEY MESSAGES... - Light rain spreads across the area tonight, with one to two tenths of an inch of rain expected through Sunday morning. - Another round of light precipitation is expected Wednesday and Wednesday night, with less than one quarter of an inch of rainfall. && .DISCUSSION... Issued at 348 PM CST Sat Nov 9 2024 An upper low is rotating slowly across the Plains today, with a surface low currently over Nebraska. The system will continue slowly northeastward tonight, spreading light rain across the Northland through much of Sunday. As a surface low shifts across the Great Lakes, a quick moving shortwave and cold front will arrive from the northwest Sunday night. Limited moisture will keep any rainfall confined to the Canadian border Sunday evening. A tightened pressure gradient as high pressure builds across the northern Plains will make for windy conditions Monday, with gusts up to 35-40mph in the Arrowhead. Temperatures will also be closer to normal for mid November with highs in the upper 30s to mid 40s. Conditions moderate Tuesday as the surface ridge moves to the east and southerly winds return. Highs Tuesday will be back into 40s areawide. Another shortwave will rotate out of the Plains Wednesday, bringing a chance of light rain and less than an half inch of rainfall to the Northland. High pressure builds across the much of the eastern CONUS for the end of the week, with broad upper level ridging extending as far north as the Great Lakes. Model variability increases beyond Thursday, but could see another quick hitting system and rainfall next weekend. 04 && .AVIATION /00Z TAFS THROUGH 00Z MONDAY/... Issued at 532 PM CST Sat Nov 9 2024 An extended period of degraded flight conditions are expected through the forecast period. A vertically stacked low moving across the Midwest is bringing scattered showers to the Northland. Ceilings will continue to descend through the evening with the potential for some widespread fog to develop overnight. Tomorrow will see a mixture of reduced visibilities due to fog and intermittent rain. Conditions will be slow to improve as we head into the afternoon hours. && .MARINE /FOR NEAR SHORE WATERS OF WESTERN LAKE SUPERIOR/... Issued at 348 PM CST Sat Nov 9 2024 A Small Craft Advisory remains in effect through 6pm this evening for Grand Portage to Grand Marais MN, and expect winds and wave heights to diminish quickly over the next couple hours. Monday, with elevated northwesterly winds, chances increase for small craft hazardous conditions behind an exiting cold front, and Small Craft Advisories will likely be needed as winds gust up to 35kts and wave heights reach 4-6ft near the Apostle Islands.
