...NORTHERN AND EASTERN MAINE 2024 SUMMER CLIMATE NARRATIVE...

METEOROLOGICAL SUMMER (JUNE 1ST - AUGUST 31ST) FINISHED WITH WELL
ABOVE AVERAGE TEMPERATURES. TEMPERATURES AVERAGED FROM 2 TO 3
DEGREES (F) ABOVE AVERAGE, EXCEPT CLOSER TO 1 TO 2 DEGREES (F) ABOVE
AVERAGE IN WASHINGTON COUNTY. PRECIPITATION WAS MORE VARIABLE AND
RANGED FROM 70 TO 130 PERCENT OF AVERAGE.

FOR THE 3-MONTH PERIOD IT WAS THE WARMEST ON RECORD IN CARIBOU WITH
AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 67.3F, WHICH WAS 0.4F WARMER THAN 2020.
FOUR OF THE WARMEST SUMMERS IN CARIBOU HAVE OCCURRED SINCE 2020, AND
SEVEN OF THE TOP 10 SINCE 2010. WEATHER RECORDS BEGAN IN 1939.

IN BANGOR, IT RANKED AS THE 4TH WARMEST SUMMER ON RECORD. FIVE OF
THE TOP 10 WARMEST SUMMERS HAVE BEEN OBSERVED SINCE 2010. WEATHER
RECORDS BEGAN IN 1925.

IN MILLINOCKET, IT RANKED AS THE 2ND WARMEST SUMMER ON RECORD BEHIND
ONLY 1937. THREE OF THE TOP 10 WARMEST SUMMERS HAVE BEEN OBSERVED
SINCE 2020. WEATHER RECORDS IN MILLINOCKET BEGAN IN 1903.

IN HOULTON, IT RANKED AT THE 4TH WARMEST SUMMER ON RECORD, AND THREE
OF THE TOP 10 WARMEST HAVE BEEN OBSERVED SINCE 2020. WEATHER RECORDS
IN HOULTON BEGAN IN 1948.

JUNE WAS A VERY WARM MONTH AND WAS THE WARMEST ON RECORD IN CARIBOU,
AND WAS THE 6TH WARMEST IN HOULTON AND MILLINOCKET, AND THE 11TH
WARMEST IN BANGOR. THE HIGH TEMPERATURE OF 96F IN CARIBOU ON THE
19TH TIED THE ALL-TIME STATION RECORD HIGH. THE LOW OF 71F ON THE
19TH ALSO TIED THE ALL-TIME STATION RECORD WARM LOW TEMPERATURE.
EARLY IN JUNE THERE WAS AN AREA OF MODERATE DROUGHT IN NORTHWEST
AROOSTOOK COUNTY PER THE U.S. DROUGHT MONITOR. NO PORTIONS OF THE
AREA WERE LISTED AS BEING IN DROUGHT BY THE END OF THE MONTH.

JULY WAS ANOTHER WARM MONTH AND RANKED AS THE 3RD WARMEST ON RECORD
IN CARIBOU, THE 4TH WARMEST AT MILLINOCKET, THE 8TH WARMEST IN
HOULTON, AND THE 9TH WARMEST IN BANGOR. THERE WERE 21 DAYS WITH A
HIGH OF 80F OR WARMER IN CARIBOU, WHICH TIED WITH 2018 FOR THE MOST
OF ANY MONTH ON RECORD. THE REMAINS OF HURRICANE BERYL PRODUCED FROM
3 TO 6 INCHES OF RAIN IN A ZONE FROM DOVER-FOXCROFT TO LINCOLN. THE
6.01 INCHES OF RAIN THAT WAS OBSERVED IN MILLINOCKET MADE IT THE 3RD
WETTEST JULY ON RECORD.

CONTINUING THE TREND OF RECENT SUMMERS, THERE WAS NOT A LOT OF
SEVERE WEATHER. THERE WERE A TOTAL OF 11 DAYS THIS PAST SUMMER WHEN
SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNINGS WERE ISSUED WITH A TOTAL OF 40 WARNINGS
ISSUED FROM JUNE 1ST THROUGH AUGUST 31ST.

THERE WERE A FEW NIGHTS THIS PAST SUMMER WITH EXCELLENT AURORAS
OWING TO INCREASED SOLAR ACTIVITY.
