Beginning with the afternoon issuance on Monday, January 12, 2026, the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Burlington, VT will transition to a key message format for the Area Forecast Discussion (AFD). This strategic change aligns the AFD with an impacts-first message philosophy, enabling our office to streamline communication and reduce redundancy. This transition moves away from a strictly chronological layout to focus on potential weather impacts and hazards. By prioritizing key messages, we aim to enhance clarity and eliminate duplication within the AFD. A side-by-side comparison of the old format and the new format can be found at: https://www.weather.gov/erh/newAFD. Please note that the number of key messages will vary from 1 to 5 depending on the weather expected during the upcoming 7 days. The latest local AFD can be found at the following link: https://forecast.weather.gov/product.php?site=BTV&product=AFD&issuedby=BTV For any questions, please contact: Scott Whittier Warning Coordination Meteorologist National Weather Service Burlington, VT scott.whittier@noaa.gov (802) 862-8711 ext. 223 or Gabriel Langbauer Meteorologist-in-Charge National Weather Service Burlington, VT gabriel.langbauer@noaa.gov (802) 862-8711 ext. 222 $$
