The 2024 Frost-Freeze program for the Adirondacks and northeast Vermont has ended. This means that Frost or Freeze headlines will no longer be issued for this region for the 2024 season. However, it is strongly urged to follow local forecasts and take preventative actions from a frost or freeze when temperatures are forecasted to be in the mid to upper 30s or colder. The Frost-Freeze program of the National Weather Service is to warn local growers and gardeners of the potential of a damaging frost or freeze for a given area during the climatologically defined growing season. This allows people to take preventative measures for plants and crops against potential damaging temperatures before the normal growing season ends. The climatologically defined growing season is the period between the median date of the last Spring freeze and the 75-90th percentile of the first Fall freeze. These are the dates in which NWS frost advisories or freeze warnings would no longer be issued for the 2024 growing season in VT and northern NY. October 1st: Northeast Vermont and the Adirondacks of NY. October 11th: the St. Lawrence River Valley of NY and the remainder of VT, except the Champlain Valley. October 21st: the Champlain Valley of VT/NY. Again, many locations have not witnessed a frost or freeze, so it`s very important to monitor future forecasts and take precautions when temperatures are forecast to be in the mid to upper 30s or colder. Please follow www.weather.gov/btv for the latest forecasts. $$
