Rain showers will bring precipitation to all areas by Monday morning, with snow showers above about 6000-7000 feet. There is a slight chance of thunderstorms (20%), mainly over northern portions of the CWA by Monday afternoon. A few hi-res models are highlighting a line moving through Baker County-West Central Mountains early tomorrow afternoon. No updates necessary. && .AVIATION...VFR with high clouds today. Lower VFR ceilings and rain showers will increase tonight across SE Oregon and SW Idaho Monday morning. Surface winds: less than 10 kt, becoming SE-SW up to 15 kt this afternoon. Winds aloft at 10kft: N-NW 5-15 kt shifting to SW 10-20 kt by Mon/00Z and increasing to 25-45 kt after Mon/06Z. KBOI...VFR with light winds today. Winds becoming SE 8-15 kt late this evening. && .PREV DISCUSSION... SHORT TERM...Today through Tuesday night...Warming will peak today as the axis of an upper level ridge passes through our CWA from west to east. Today will be generally sunny with light southeast winds. Clouds will increase late today in Oregon ahead of an approaching Pacific surface cold front and upper trough. The clouds will spread eastward into Idaho tonight, and rain showers will begin in Oregon as the cold front moves inland. Showers will be most numerous in our northern areas overnight and Monday, tapering to only sprinkles along the Nevada border. The northern areas will get .15 to .25 inch rainfall through Monday afternoon, and another .20 to .30 inch Monday night through Tuesday as moist westerly aloft continues off the Pacific. These amounts are marginally greater than forecast yesterday. Latest models (and SPC) also see enough instability for a slight chance of thunderstorms Monday afternoon and evening in Baker County and the west-central Idaho Mountains. High temps today will range in the 50s to mid 60s in the mountains, and mid 60s to lower 70s in the valleys. Lows tonight will be mild under cloud cover, generally 30s in the mountains and lower to mid 40s in the valleys. Monday`s highs behind the cold front will lower as much as 10 degrees from today`s highs, with the greatest cooling in Oregon and least in south-central Idaho, which will see their main cooling on Tuesday instead. Light to moderate southeast winds tonight ahead of the cold front will shift to northwest behind the front on Monday, with afternoon gusts reaching 30 mph in eastern Oregon and the southwest Idaho Highlands. Lighter northwest winds are expected elsewhere on Monday. LONG TERM...Wednesday through Sunday...An upper level ridge will amplify along the coast on Wednesday. This will push the storm track to our north with any lingering showers across northern areas ending by the afternoon. Temperatures will warm a few degrees from Tuesday as the ridge builds. The ridge axis will move overhead and then to our east on Thursday. The ridge combined with increasing southwest flow aloft will result in temperatures around 10 degrees warmer than Wednesday, or around 15 degrees above normal. On Friday, an upper level trough will move into the Pacific Northwest, but the bulk of the cooler air accompanying the trough is expected to remain to our west until the weekend, resulting in temperatures only a couple degrees lower than Thursday. Uncertainty increases over the weekend as ensembles disagree on the timing and strength of the trough as it moves inland. Overall, a cooling trend is anticipated with temperatures forecast to cool to a few degrees below normal by Sunday. Chances of showers will increase on Friday across the northern mountains with around a 10-40% chance of showers across the area over the weekend. Periods of breezy winds are expected Thursday through the weekend. && .BOI WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... ID...None.
