Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Binghamton NY
645 AM EDT Mon Aug 4 2025

.SYNOPSIS...
Canadian wildfire smoke over the region will lead to hazy skies
and poor air quality today. Otherwise, high pressure and dry
conditions will continue to be in place for much of the week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Smoke from Canadian wildfires will remain present over the region
today, leading to hazy skies and poor air quality. An air quality
alert was issued through midnight for the entire forecast area other
than Pike County under the guidance of NYS DEC and PA DEP. The HRRR
and RAP model guidance do have smoke lingering over the region
through Tuesday. Otherwise, high pressure will stay in control with
warm and dry conditions expected through the near term period. Highs
will be in the 80s and lows will be in the 50s and 60s. Even though
there will be periods of more cloud cover tonight, patchy valley fog
cannot be ruled out early Tuesday morning.

&&

.SHORT TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
Weak waves move through during the mid-week period with mid-
level moisture will be present at times leading to isolated
afternoon showers both Wednesday and Thursday. Low-level
moisture will be more limited, so showers that can develop
should generally be light. Limited instability and weak shear
may also support non-severe thunderstorms. Otherwise, high
pressure stays parked over much of the Northeast and will keep
most of this period dry. While westerly flow will keep
conditions mild, temperatures will trend slightly cooler with
highs in the 70s and 80s and lows in the 50s and 60s.

&&

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
The high pressure will slide offshore this weekend but will still
have enough of an influence to keep systems out of the region until
at least late Sunday. The latest run of the GFS has a weak system
along the coast that could bring rain to the far southern areas of
the region by the end of the weekend. This is different from the 12z
GFS run which had an organized low near the Delmarva Peninsula
coast. This update keeps conditions dry as most other deterministic
guidance show little to no activity then. Warmer air extends
northward as an upper ridge slides across the region this
weekend.

&&

.AVIATION /12Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...

VFR conditions are expected through the TAF period for all
terminals. Morning valley fog continues to dissipate, and should
burn off by 1230Z for ELM. Wildfire smoke is expected to keep
conditions hazy today at the CNY terminals, but no restrictions
are expected.

Outlook...

Monday afternoon through Friday...Mainly VFR. Early morning fog
possible most mornings at ELM. Wildfire smoke is expected to
keep hazy conditions around into Tuesday.
