149 CXUS56 KPQR 021736 CLAAST ANNUAL CLIMATE REPORT NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PORTLAND OR 500 PM PST WED 1 JAN 2025 ..ASTORIA 2024 WEATHER IN REVIEW... 2024 NOTABLE WEATHER EVENTS & RECORDS * WARM JULY (4TH WARMEST ON RECORD) * AUGUST THUNDERSTORMS * NOVEMBER WATERSPOUTS NEAR THE COASTLINE * DEEP STORM OFFSHORE, WITH HIGH SEAS IN NOV * STRONG STORM WITH HIGH WINDS AND HIGH SEAS IN DEC MONTHLY WEATHER RECAPS... JANUARY...RATHER TYPICAL RAINY AND MILD START TO THE NEW YEAR THROUGH THE 11TH. THEN, STRONG OFFSHORE FLOW ALLOWED COLDER AIR TO PUSH INTO THE AREA. A VERY STRONG ARCTIC FRONT MOVED ACROSS THE AREA ON THE 12TH AND 13TH, WITH TEMPERATURES DROPPING INTO THE MID TO UPPER 20S ALONG WITH FREEZING RAIN. ICE ACCUMULATIONS OF AROUND A HALF INCH LED TO POWER OUTAGES AND TRANSPORTATION DISRUPTIONS. TEMPERATURES MODERATED BY THE 17TH WITH MORE RAIN. THE 15.16 INCHES OF PRECIPITATION AT ASTORIA WAS AROUND 4.5 INCHES ABOVE NORMAL. ENDED THE MONTH ON A RELATIVELY WARM NOTE, WITH HIGHS IN THE LOWER TO MID 60S THE 27TH TO 31ST, INCLUDING A DAILY RECORD HIGH OF 65 ON THE 29TH. FEBRUARY...CONTINUED THE MILD WEATHER INTO FEBRUARY, WITH RATHER QUIET WEATHER AND NEAR NORMAL TEMPERATURES THROUGH MID-MONTH. LOW PRESSURE OVER BRITISH COLUMBIA DROPPED SOUTH ON THE 14TH, BRINGING COOLER AND WET WEATHER. MORE MILD WEATHER RETURNED THE 19TH TO 24TH. STRONG MOIST SOUTHWEST FLOW BROUGHT RAIN TO CLOSE THE MONTH. MARCH...MARCH BEGAN RATHER COOL AND DAMP AS COOLER AIR REMAINED OVER THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST, WITH OCCASIONAL SHOWERS. THEN, BRIEF PERIOD OF HIGH PRESSURE BROUGHT MILDER TEMPERATURES AND DRY WEATHER. A POTENT FRONT MOVED ONSHORE THE 10TH. HIGH PRESSURE RETURNED WHILE OFFSHORE FLOW THE 14TH TO 18TH CONTRIBUTED TO RATHER WARM AIR MASS WITH HIGHS GENERALLY IN THE 60S, EXCEPT FOR THE 16TH WHICH PRODUCED A RECORD DAILY HIGH OF 75 DEGREES. THE HIGH PRESSURE RIDGE GRADUALLY WEAKENED AS LOW PRESSURE PERSISTED JUST OFFSHORE THROUGH THE 28TH, MAINTAINING COOLER, SHOWERY WEATHER. APRIL...MILD WEATHER EARLY IN THE MONTH. THEN, A VIGOROUS UPPER LOW DROPPED OVER THE PACIFIC NW THE 3RD TO 4TH BRINGING RAIN AND COOLER CONDITIONS. ONSHORE FLOW MAINTAINED UNSETTLED WEATHER AS OCCASIONAL FRONTS PUSHED ONSHORE. BY THE MIDDLE OF THE MONTH, RATHER STRONG HIGH PRESSURE RIDGE JUST OFFSHORE BROUGHT OFFSHORE WINDS WITH WARM, DRY WEATHER. COOLER AND SHOWERY WEATHER RETURNED FOR THE 25TH TO 30TH, WITH A DAILY RECORD RAINFALL OF 1.29 INCHES ON THE 25TH. MAY...BEGAN THE MONTH COOL AND SHOWERY AS BROAD UPPER LOW PRESSURE SHIFTED ACROSS THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST. A STRONG FRONT PUSHED ACROSS THE REGION THE 3RD AND 4TH WITH MODEST RAINFALL. HIGH PRESSURE STRENGTHENED WHILE OFFSHORE FLOW ALLOWED FOR DRY AND WARMING CONDITIONS BEGINNING THE 8TH. A HIGH OF 84 DEGREES ON THE 10TH WAS THE WARMEST DAY OF THE MONTH. BY THE 16TH, ONSHORE FLOW RETURNED WITH MORE SEASONAL TEMPERATURES ALONG WITH SPOTTY LIGHT PRECIPITATION AS WEAK FRONTS IN THE FLOW MOVED ONSHORE. THE STRONGEST FRONT ARRIVED ON THE 21ST. UNEVENTFUL END OF MAY THANKS TO RATHER PERSISTENT HIGH PRESSURE OFFSHORE AND VARIABLE ONSHORE FLOW. JUNE...JUNE STARTED RATHER WET AS A STRONG COLD FRONT PUSHED INTO THE REGION THE 2ND AND 3RD, INCLUDING A DAILY RECORD RAINFALL OF 1.92 INCHES ON THE 2ND. THEN, MOSTLY WESTERLY FLOW ALOFT MAINTAINED NEAR SEASONAL TEMPERATURES. WARMER TEMPERATURES WITH DRY CONDITIONS THE 6TH TO 8TH, AND AGAIN THE 19TH TO 20TH AS HIGH PRESSURE STRENGTHENED. WESTERLY FLOW CONTINUED THROUGH THE END OF JUNE, MAINTAINING MILD WEATHER WITH FEW SHOWERS. JULY...IT WAS THE 4TH WARMEST JULY ON RECORD FOR ASTORIA. HIGH PRESSURE BROUGHT THE WARMEST TEMPERATURES FROM THE 5TH TO THE 9TH, PEAKING AT 90 DEGREES ON THE 5TH. AS HIGH PRESSURE SHIFTED EAST, SOUTHWEST FLOW ALLOWED FOR COOLER MARINE AIR TO FILTER INLAND. SEASONAL CONDITIONS PERSISTED TO END JULY, WITH RAIN ON THE 29TH. AUGUST...BEGAN WARM WITH RETURN OF STRONG HIGH PRESSURE OVER THE REGION. THEN, ONSHORE FLOW BROUGHT SEASONAL TEMPERATURES. BY MID- MONTH, A RATHER STRONG UPPER TROUGH DROPPED OUT OF THE GULF OF ALASKA ON THE 15TH TO 18TH, CREATING A RATHER UNSTABLE AIR MASS, WITH SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS ON THE 17TH. ANOTHER UPPER LOW MOVED INTO THE REGION FROM THE 21ST TO 25TH, KEEPING TEMPERATURES ON THE COOLER SIDE ALONG WITH SOME LIGHT RAIN. HIGH PRESSURE STRENGTHENED WITH A WARMING TREND THE 29TH. SEPTEMBER...AFTER A MILD START TO THE MONTH, HIGH PRESSURE OVER THE REGION STRENGTHENED, BRINGING MUCH WARMER CONDITIONS FOR THE 4TH AND 5TH. THE HIGH OF 89 ON THE 5TH SET A DAILY RECORD. BY MID-MONTH, A RATHER STRONG UPPER TROUGH DROPPED OUT OF THE GULF OF ALASKA ON THE 10TH TO 12TH, BRINGING SHOWERY WEATHER. ANOTHER BRIEF WARM UP ON THE 24TH. A STRONG COLD FRONT MOVED INLAND ON THE 25TH, BRINGING RAIN AND COOLER TEMPERATURES. OCTOBER...SEASONABLE CONDITIONS TO START THE MONTH. A COLD FRONT MOVED ACROSS THE REGION ON THE 4TH BRINGING RAIN. ANOTHER FRONT PUSHED ONSHORE THE 8TH. DRY AND SEASONABLY WARM UNTIL THE 14TH AS A SERIES OF FRONTS BROUGHT RAIN EACH DAY THROUGH THE 21ST. A STRONGER FRONT MOVED TOWARD THE REGION THE 26TH, BRINGING RAIN AND STRONG SOUTH WINDS. SHOWERS AND COOL TEMPERATURES PERSISTED THROUGH THE END OF THE MONTH. NOVEMBER...THE WET WEATHER OF LATE OCTOBER ROLLED INTO NOVEMBER WITH SEASONABLE TEMPERATURES. THEN A BRIEF DRY PERIOD WITH HIGHS IN THE 60S. RAIN RETURNED THE 9TH AND CONTINUED THROUGH THE 27TH. AN EF-0 TORNADO MOVED ONSHORE AT ROCKAWAY BEACH ON THE 11TH PRODUCING MINOR DAMAGE AT A LOCAL SCHOOL. A DEEP STORM OFFSHORE BROUGHT HIGH SEAS AND STRONG WINDS THE 12TH TO 13TH. WATERSPOUTS WERE OBSERVED NEAR THE COASTLINE ON THE 20TH. DRY AND SEASONABLY COOL TO END THE MONTH. DECEMBER...DRY WEATHER PERSISTED THROUGH EARLY DECEMBER, BUT THE RAINS CAME AS SEVERAL FRONTAL SYSTEMS MOVED ONSHORE. STRONG SOUTH WINDS THE 17TH TO 18TH WITH GUSTS OF 50 TO 70 MPH ALONG THE COAST, WITH DOWNED TREES AND POWER OUTAGES REPORTED. ANOTHER STRONG FRONT LATE CHRISTMAS INTO THE 26TH WITH HIGH WINDS GUSTING 60 TO 70 MPH, ALONG WITH HIGH SURF AND TIDAL OVERFLOW ALONG THE COAST. THE HIGH OF 64 DEG ON THE 20TH TIED THE ALL-TIME WARMEST TEMPERATURE (64 DEG ON 26 DEC 1980) AT ASTORIA (RECORDS DATING BACK TO 1887). ============================================================== NEW RECORDS SET IN 2024 (PREVIOUS RECORD IN PARENTHESES) + INDICATES MOST RECENT OF MULTIPLE PRIOR OCCURRENCES JANUARY... 27TH NEW.
