Updated for poor RH recovery tonight.
.DISCUSSION...Critical fire weather conditions expected across at least part of
Interior Alaska Friday and Saturday. Red Flag Warnings remain in
effect for the Nenana Hills north and east through 2200.
Additional Red Flag products will likely be needed on Saturday
across the northwest Interior for hot/dry/windy conditions.
The focus for fire weather concerns Friday will be the
development of a low level jet across the Fortymile, White
Mountains, and Tanana Valley as a surface high builds to the
northeast while a thermal trough develops over the Tanana Valley
and shifts west along the Alaska Range in the evening. Friday
afternoon will be hot and dry, and NE winds will increase after
1600 and persist all night with the low level jet. Gusts to 25 mph
likely, especially across higher terrain. This will lead to poor
RH recovery for most areas north and east of Fairbanks as well,
increasing the length of the burn period. RHs will struggle to recover
to 45% across most areas above 1000 feet.
Saturday will be the hottest and driest day, with another low
level jet looking to develop over the NW Interior. On Sunday, the
ridge of high pressure aloft begins to break down, bringing cooler
conditions. Showers and thunderstorms are looking increasingly
likely by Monday, with significant cooling conditions and rising
RHs expected next week. Multiple days of wetting rain are not
expected though, and showers will be mostly scattered.
