223 PM AKDT Friday 28 June 2024

FORECAST VALID...Wednesday 3 July 2024

ANALYSIS CONFIDENCE...High.

SYNOPSIS...Low pressure in the Bering Sea weakens over the Alaska
Peninsula through Monday. High pressure will build over the southern
Chukchi Sea over the weekend. A low pressure system from Siberia
will send a front over the Chukchi Sea early next week.

The main ice edge extends from 66 4N 166 44W to 67 8N 166 75W to
67 33N 169 42W to 66 13N 169 11W and continues southward along
the Russian coast. There is also an area of brash sea ice remaining
to the northeast of Saint Lawrence Island.

From land-based points in Alaska, the main ice edge extends from 17
nm southwest of Shishmaref to 50 nm northwest of Shishmaref to 75 nm
southwest of Point Hope to 30 nm northwest of Diomede and continues
southward along the Russian coast. The ice edge is open water. There
is also an area of brash sea ice remaining to the northeast of Saint

FORECAST FOR THE BEAUFORT SEA (DAYS 1 through 5)...Forecast
confidence is high. Light and variable winds will make tides and
currents as well as the Beaufort Gyre the predominant mover for sea
ice. Near-shore ice will continue to degrade.

FORECAST FOR THE CHUKCHI SEA (DAYS 1 through 5)...Light and variable
winds will make tides and currents the predominant mover of sea ice
through the weekend. Southerly winds through the Bering Strait will
develop on Monday, hastening melt and retreat of the pack ice edge,
moving it to the north 20 to 30 nm. Expect melt to continue to
accelerate in the southern Chukchi Sea through the period.

-BERING SEA-

PKZ817-North side of Saint Lawrence Island out to 15 nm-
PKZ854-Sledge Island to Wales greater than 15 nm-

FORECAST FOR THE BERING SEA (DAYS 1 through 5)...Alaska waters of
the Bering Sea will largely be sea ice free over the weekend.
